I have read online that memory issues are very common in MS. So do patients keep it quiet and just deal with it.

Because I can not be the only one who has brain farts occasionally. This must be one of the ten most common

symptoms.

My driving is not as confident as before but I still do it just not as often or as far. And I feel like I am overly careful

when I do drive.

Do any of you have similar memory lapses and do they come and go?

Hey sueg,

I was diagnosed with MS in 2001 at the age of 27. Since the onset my physical issues have been my biggest problem. However, in the last 3 years my cognitive process, memory, and comprehension has been drastically effected. Due to lack of concentration & general motor skills my family has voiced many concerns over my driving. Finally I had to listen since their concerns were valid. I only drive close to home, in low traffic times. It's difficult losing your independence in this way. Keep your head up

Loosing cognitive skills, memory problems is scary to say the least. I do have bouts myself, but at times I just brush it off to being 60, or too much on my mind, or breaking a routine, etc...

If it concerns you do not remain silent, when u see your neurologist next time, tell this person what is going on.

I did tell the Neurologist and he wants me to have a Neuro-psychological test for my driving and
cognitive skills. I hate to see what the results are like but I guess it could be better than I am thinking.
Maybe I will still be able to drive--I hope.

The only problem I have is an occasional memory lapse....

Well how bad does it bother you. I mean everyone experience gaps in memory.  Medication, sickness like a cold, over tired, to list a very few can and will cause memory slips.  If it is really bad, then I guess check it out.  If it is an occassional slip, then you are stepping right along with everyone else you share space with.

Id hate to see you go in for tests, and for what ever reason loose your driver's licence when in fact there is nothing wrong other than normal daily things.

Sometimes we have to be very careful with what we really want to know. Heck, it could absolutely have nothing to do with MS - but a doctor on a mission may think or say otherwise...

Just be careful what you ask for..

Awhile ago I was driving home and it was just getting dark outside (I think it was near the time change week). My headlights didn't seem very bright and I wanted to recheck that they were really on but could not remember where

the light switch was.

Then a few days later I could not remember where the dishes and cups were kept in the kitchen.

Still, I drive around my neighborhood, not very far and have had no other memory gaps like before--with driving.

Have them with everyday things but it does not seem as scarey.

The driving episode really scared the heck out of me. I am always a careful driver and alert so I am kind of sure that something is up in the thinking area. I don't mind other things that I have trouble remember-ing but stuff that might be dangerous like driving is another thing. But still, I would so much hate to give up my license-I am only 62 and although that is not young I think I could be driving for at least 10 more years. So I guess I am just rambling on here but it is just very concerning.
