My neuro doc said my white spots seen on the MRI are old. So can old lesions cause signs of illness?

Thanks!

Yes they are scars and it is the scars that cause the damage to the nerves, causing symptoms

The Neuro doc said the spots could be over 20 years old. And I would think that only new or enhanced lesions would cause problems.

Beau is correct. A lesion is a place that had been damaged. The symptoms can occur as long as the demyelination exists. Those neurons don't function correctly or they don't function at all, hence the symptoms.

My Dr. Did 23 MRI's no new neurological activity yet he found the old residules of my MS from 2008. i am only 45 recently put on 1800 mg gabapentin. Does anyone have any insight gor me so frustrated my arm was paralyzed in 2008 but recovered most of the feeling. My legs concern me.

Hi Michele,

I'm sorry you are experiencing such a rough time. Are you on a medication to slow down your MS?

Definitely old lesions can be annoying. I once painted a ceiling and because I was looking up it irritated an old lesion in my neck. I was numb all down one side all over again. In saying that an mri showed one of my lesions disappeared and I put it down to overdosing on omega 3 for 6 months. But there's only so much fish u can eat:)
