My story began with eye pain and blurred vision that developed into loss of vision of my left eye that I was quickly diagnosed with optic neuritis by an eye doctor. I have a long standing history of epilepsy so he referred me back to my own neurologist who saw me about two weeks later as he was out of town when the optic neuritis first developed. Once, I saw my neurologist he offered to place me on high dose prednisone via IV to help with my vision but he could not ensure or promise it would help my vision get back to what it once was so I chose not to take it due to the side effects and cost. At the time he told me what it meant to be diagnosed with optic neuritis and what the chances of developing MS in the future could be. He wanted to order a MRI of my brain and entire spinal cord but at the time I could not afford that entire work up so I agreed to an MRI of my brain and orbits which showed the obvious optic neuritis but my brain was clear of any lesions, so that was good. But, forward four years to the present I have since starting developing strange symptoms that no one including my present neurologist can explain. I have weird sensations in my hands and arms that to the best of my ability can only be described as if that my brain and hands and sensors in between are disconnected for brief periods of time. For these brief periods of time I can look at my hands and see that they are say palm side down but for some reason the "sensors" are telling my brain that they are palm side up and turned outward. These sensations are random and will last sometimes a couple minutes to 10 minutes and I maintain full control of my hands but with decreased grip strength. For the last couple years my neuro exam reflux tests have been abnormal. I have had a recent lower back MRI without lesions present on my spine but I have multiple bulging discs. In my mind I have attributed this to my drop foot on my right side. Recently, I have had blood testing done and my kidney testing came back abnormal, Creatinine slightly high and GFR slightly low so my PCP is referring me to a nephrologist. Any suggestions to research would be helpful. Thanks

Hi Blaze,

Welcome to the board. I'm sorry you find yourself considering an MS diagnosis. Having optic neuritis is often a precursor as you know. Your kidney issues would be unrelated to an MS diagnosis. I hope you follow up with that.

You might ask for a new MRI of the brain and cervical spine. You could also ask for evoked potentials. Vision, hearing and extremities is often used for an MS diagnosis.

In my opinion, you need to be aggressive. If you have MS, then it has gone untreated for 4 years. Many people with MS benefit from getting and staying on a disease modifying treatment.

I have had the evoked potentials when I had the optic neuritis twice and both times I failed the testing. I have a loss of hearing in my left ear but I have always attributed that to having a tractor trailer tire blow up on me while I was firefighting. The physicians have not considered MS due to the lack of lesions on the brain and lumbar spine MRI's. I don't know if mentally I can go through any more MRI's due to claustrophobia and my bulging discs as I cant lay flat without having extreme pain/numbness in my back and lower legs. It took everything I had to finish my last one. But, I know what I am experiencing is not normal. I would just like some answers, if I had that I would be able to stop dwelling and move on.
I have my nephrologist appt next week.

Hello Blaze1,

Have you seen a Neurosurgeon about the bulging discs? Bulging discs can cause pain, numbness, foot drop and other Neurological symptoms. If you haven't seen a Neurosurgeon about your bulging discs then I would recommend doing so as soon as possible.

A Lumbar MRI is not used to detect lesions in MS but to rule in/out back problems such as what was found in your case. The most common MRIs ordered for MS is the brain and cervical (neck) but sometimes the thoracic (mid back). Those same MRIs can also show back problems, if any.

Best wishes on your appointment with the Nephrologist. Medications, over the counter and prescription, can cause blood work for kidney function to be out of the normal range.
