i'm having a spinal tap (lumbar puncture) and wondering if MS shows up in that and if it doesn't can you still have it?
I am anxious as this may be my last chance to get something checked as I think the specialist is doing it to keep me quiet as I am Really asking what is Wrong as 90% of my symptoms point to MS I do Also have RA & Fibromyalgia, but recently these (MS Type Symptoms) are getting increasingly severe

I cant carry a cup of tea that I don't spill half as I wobble, my memory is shot, my eye sight is worsening, as is my Tremor, incontinence , Muscle spasms , Fatigue ,Panic Attacks & Anxiety Dizziness & inability to walk in a straight line .
I have had this for some time & keep getting told oh it's your RA !! No I don't think it is

A lumbar puncture can show signs of MS. But it is just one small part of a battery of tests that you must fail in order to receive a diagnosis of MS.

The other typical tests are: MRI of the brain, blood work showing no infection or other cause for symptoms, evoked potentials (vision, hearing and extremities, a thorough neurological test of reflexes and responses.

The symptoms you describe should show up in a neurological exam. Have you seen a neurologist?

The lumbar puncture is looking for oligoclonal bands. These indicate that there is an immune response going on in your central nervous system. In the case of MS, this is due to an inappropriate or autoimmune dysfunction. Blood work taken at the same time should indicate that there is indeed no real infection.

I hope you are being seen by a neurologist who is experienced with or specialized in MS. Best of luck to you and do keep me posted.

Hi Gretchen Thank You
yes I am Sort of seeing A Neurologist - ? Because I being on public health I do not have the money to see him so I saw his registrar and he over sees it by popping in at the end & reviewing ( I think in retrospect I should have tried to get to see him ) But I guess I am getting 2 peoples views

they have done a brain MRI which needs to be checked but on first report seems clear
also some blood work which was apparently ok
the test where they electric zap you on arms, hand & for some reason only 1 leg - this showed carpel tunnel
an EEG which came back with issues - they didn't clarify but apparently slow responses
so next up is the lumbar puncture & this is why I am anxious because if this is ok - Then what next

I got the feeling he was brushing me off & focusing on my memory & seeing the Tremor as Slight because when I was in there of course it only shook a bit & he said lots of people have a tremor !!
but I bet those people don't throw their money across the room because they are shaking so much or try to use a remote control and hit the button 7 times shocked

I Do think he is a Good Neurologist & he dose work in MS so again I feel he's my last chance.

An EEG is not typically used as a diagnostic tool for MS. It's typically used to diagnose epilepsy, stroke or other brain disorders. The electric shocking test is an EMG. That is a test of the peripheral nerve system. That test doesn't show the functioning of the central nervous system. EMGs are occasionally used to rule out other diseases that may share symptoms with MS. Most doctors who use the EMG don't suspect or may not be testing for MS.

Public health programs can be notorious for being extremely conservative about diagnosing MS. MS is very expensive to treat. They will want to be very sure before paying for expensive disease modifying medications.

Without brain or spinal cord lesions, your chances of getting diagnosed with MS could be remote. Hopefully they find the cause of your symptoms and it's easier and cheaper to treat than MS.

By the way, long term prednisone use can cause most of the symptoms you're describing. Prednisone can cause loss of bone density, diabetes, anxiety, vision problems, memory problems, myopathy and tetany.

You may not have the option to not take prednisone. If your symptoms are caused by prednisone, then you may have to live with your symptoms.

However its now Wednesday I have a Bad headache
and keep getting feelings of warm water running down my inner leg
I did get told I could get the headache but a bit concerned about the water sensation
I googled it and get told it could be nerve damage ?
Hopefully its just some inflammation
Hubby says I have a big bruise on my back,
I have had no leakage or bleeding and it is sore when I sit on a chair but Not badly hurting or anything like that
I don't have any results yet so have to wait till I go back to Doctor at end of month

if your headache continues, let your doctor know. I'm sorry about the bruising. Your body is probably a bit inflamed after your lumbar puncture. Rest and eat healthy and you should feel better soon.

Hopefully, MS can be ruled out with this test.

Hi Gretchen
just to update you on my spinal tap and neurologist My Headache is still there only a lot less I went back to the neurologist and I saw Both the Neurologist & his Registrar and I must say the registrar this is the 2nd time I got him he was Great he has given me some tablets to treat headache
as to the worry it may be MS the tests came back negative However they seem to be thinking it could by caused by the Methotrexate
and weird thing is I stopped taking it about a month ago when I had the lumbar puncture done as I was worried about infection and Now after talking with him I Wont restart it, I have noticed a flare in my RA but I guess I will have to live with it or try some other treatments But I would rather live with pain and Not loose my mind
thanks for all your support while I was worrying about MS and I really hope your days are brighter

BadDay,

I'm very glad that MS has been ruled out. That is great news. I hope you can manage your RA, and that you're feeling better very soon.
