May ms be caused by a massive injury like a fracture of a major bone?

I was diagnose with MS 2 years ago. Several years prior to my diagnosis, I fractured my knee cap and 15 years after this first fracture I shattered my ankle.  I am wondering is there any relation between these injuires and my diagnosis of MS?  I am not suggesting that MS brought on my injuries but that the injuries may have triggered the MS.

Hey Artmom

Well it's believed by some, myself included, that ms can be triggered by things. I'm not sure that a fracture or even several could do that tho. I have always felt things that are big stressers on the body are most likely the culprits IF i'm right about this...but i suppose the fractures u'r talking about could be very stressful and prob were! My mind has always gone to things like viral stressers for example. It'll be interesting to see other's responses to this. I"d imagine that, no, u'r fractured knee cap and shattered ankle didn't trigger u'r ms, but then again i'm no doc nor a med professonal of any kind...just my opinion.

This is very ironic. I was thinking the same thing this afternoon. Mine was stress fractures in my spine.

I broke my elbow many years ago, and required surgery and several months of pt. This past fall (late November) I slipped and fell in the shower and hurt my knee. Crutches and pt followed that, and it's still not back to "normal." Had my first (and only) flare in mid March. Other stressful heath things were going on in my family. Could the fall and stress had triggered the ms to become active? I think it is a definite possibility.

While there isn't any direct link between fracturing a major (or for that matter, minor) bone,

as the others suggested, there is some evidence that stress can cause MS to flare, if it already exists in the system (whether it was identified as MS previously or not).  So while your break didn't "cause" the MS, it could have caused your autoimmune system to malfunction, and that malfunction became MS.

Hi, I had a similar past as well. I dropped a 250 pound piece of raw casting metal on my right foot and broke it around March of last year. Then my around June of 06 I started having my first symptom which was optic neuritis. In October my father died and it seemed my eye got even worse and I finally went to the doc in November. Just got diagnosed in May of this year. I think that it is a possibility that stress and injuries could bring MS on. To coincidental that this is happened to other people as well.
