I have been having pain above my knee on and off for years, usually it only hurt when I bent down or stood back up. But the pain seems to be getting worse and it hurts even when I move it, last night the pain woke me up. There isn't any swelling. I don't think its caused by ms, but I don't have any other signs of arthritis, bursitis, or tendenitus(Sp?) or anything like that. Has anyone experienced this? Thanks.

Sounds like my husband's knees. For him, it definitely was arthritis. What kinds of signs of arthritis are you looking for? They're not always visible from the outside.

He alternates hot and cold packs if it get really bad; otherwise an ibuprofen seems to help.

thank you for the quick response. I thought arthritis causes swelling and distortion in the joints. so I wasnt sure if it was that or a tendon.

Well, it can cause swelling, but not always, and it's not always so obvious. And it could be a joint/socket problem in the knee, too -- all that bending and weight-bearing.  If it is bad enough to waken you in the night, you probably want to be talking to your doctor about it.
