Hi everyone,

Just a quick question, when I had my ileostomy surgery they said no mushrooms!!  Why?
I eat everything else, lettuce, tomatoes, black olives.  But they said avoid mushrooms.  If I chew them well I don't understand how they can be harmful.  Unless they swell and thats why they say no muchrooms.
Do any of you eat them?

Oh, I didn't know anything about no mushroom. I eat them all the time, in fact, I had some at lunch. So far, I haven't had any issues!

Hi

They said that to me, because unless you chew them really thoroughly they can cause blockages as they don't break down at all.. Once I was changing my pouch and some that I'd eaten earlier started coming through and I had to actually pull them out as they were being tricky. So if you chew them enough they're fine but otherwise they can make problems! Hope that helps :)

Speaking of mushrooms, I have had my share of problems with them in the past. It took me a while to figure it out, but here's what I've concluded: I used to eat a lot of pizza. And we'd always have leftovers that I'd warm back up in the oven. WELL, that extra "warming up" just dried out the 'shrooms and made them extremely hard to digest for me. OH what a horrible gut ache. So no more 'shrooms on pizzas for me!

I agree with Mary --- be very careful with them, esp the more fiberous ones. The regular canned mushrooms aren't too bad, nor are the white button mushrooms although the stems can be worse than the caps. I like to use mushrooms to flavor stuff and find myself chopping them very fine, almost like mincing them. Never can be too careful when you KNOW they can cause a problem.

Some folks don't have any problems with them at all ----- I'm soooo jealous cuz I love 'em!!!

I've never had problems with them thank God. Then again, I wasn't told anything about not eating them and yesterday I bought 2 packs of the white button mushrooms..lol...now I'm scared!!!! I also eat salad literally every single day and no problems except that they go through me quicker but I love salad and never see myself not having it. Good luck

Congrats on salads -- I can eat them too, cautiously. Love them as well. Keep eating if they don't bother you. Button 'shrooms are less fibery than others --- ENJOY!!!!!
