Hello everyone!  I'm am kind of new around here but trying to learn as much as I can to support my new bf.  He has just recently gotten back to a healthy-for-him weight after an unrelated illness and will be scheduled for a Reversal Ileostomy in July.
That, in itself, is great news after 2 years, however I am concerned about his self-image if he loses all the weight he has managed to put on, possibly causing depression.  I am encouraging and supportive but I know he thinks he will get smaller and it will affect my attraction to him.  I tell him not to worry but...  My uncle had the same surgery and he lost alot of weight...I am worried about his self-image - I don't want him to block me out.
Can anyone share any experiences about having the reversal and weight loss?  And if there any spouses/SO's out there, how did you deal with the self-image issues, if there were any?  How long is the physical recovery process afterwards?
Thanks so much for your help!

I just had the reversal and my weight loss came from the first surgery having an ileostomy.  My big big problem is constipation and hope some one has news for me. Good luck, it is so nice not to have the pouch.  I just was so used to the way it filled so easily and now I can't go!!!!!!!
A whole new life.

Hi, I actually put on weight! At first when i got my ileostomy I obviously lost it but once I started eating and getting my appetite back my weight went up! You are doing the right thing by supporting him, that's the main thing :-)

Thank you both for your responses. I was not sure what to expect but at least now I have a clue. I guess I will stock up on metamucil and prune juice LOL. I suppose it's kind of the same function as when babies start to consume solid foods - their intestines need time to adjust?

Ricky - I sincerly hope that your body adjusts sooner rather than later and this will all be a distant memory. How long were you in the hospital? What about when you got home? How able-bodied were you?

Gillcom - wishing you the best of luck with your reversal and recovery.
