A total is when they do not leave any of the large intestine. The take the lower part of the small (ileum) and connect to the rectum. It sounds like you are having a sub total, this is when they leave some of the large intestine. Hope this helps

hi Mommyphotographer:

It depends on the percentage of the colon that they are taking out...last year they took 50% of my daughters colon out...but left all the rectum,so they called it a sub total. On 6/5/08 thet took the rest of her colon, most of her rectum, and even a small part of her small intestine, and they called it a total... She has nothing of her colon left at all. They conected her small intestine directly to what was left of her rectum. we are still in the hospital now and I just asked her nurse the difference between the both ,and she said it is based on the % that they are taking out...and some doctors have a little different %,and call it one of the two...hope this helps :-) !!

You will be in my prayers for your s/x and recovery yeah !!!

Hi mommyphotographer,

My daughter is 11 yrs old and she had many s/x for colonic inertia,or her drs call it a neurological colon. She had no motility at all since birth...She does not have a bag at this time ...we are hoping that this works, and we won,t have to go to a bag...As far as the pain goes, she is on really good medicinces for that,so it is being really controlled well...they have a pain team here that is wonderfull We are at Boston Childrens Hospital..We will be here untill we have bowell sounds and we know that the s/x worked...we got admitted 6/1/08 for clean out etc...We are use to this...we always are in the hospital for a while..if this doesn,t work we will have to go to a bag. It,s all in GODS hands :-)   Like I said we will be praying for you...It will most likely not be as extreme for you...my daughter has always had the extreme happen for her, most people that we have read about on here everything goes really well!! Feel free to ask more questions and if I can help I will yeah !!

my heart goes out to you. I have had problems my whole life also. and because of having a colon that didnt work my whole life now it is so stretched out and has grown to several feet more then the normal person has.I finally found a doctor who knows what he is doing. (meaning a sepcialist) i should of been to him years ago. over the years when i was your daughters age all they told me was to eat better and i do eat good. they have NO IDEA how good i eat. but nothing works when you have a colon that just lays there and does nothing more then hold pounds and pounds of poop. and the sad thing is my rectum doesnt work either. so i am worried i will have a second surgery to fix that later.
normally my dr said that the patients have only a one day prep but becuase my colon dont work i have to do it for 3 days. starting tomorrow. my dear hubby is making me cheese cake tonight so i can have that before my starvation diet (tomorrow when i wake up) my surgery is friday and i am scared because i have never had my stomach cut open before. i have had 5 kids and they were all natural so this alone will be new to me. and he told me with my colon not working ever that he dont know if it will get going again like most people do. So i am very hopeful this will be a life saver . i really appreciate your prayers. God is in control that is right and i am leaning on him. I am not going to second guess his plan but the human in me does feel scared. i am still parying for your daughter also.. please keep me posted.
