i know that having surgery is in my future so i have a few questions.  my hope is to eventually have a j-pouch, but i know some can not.  i have left sided ulcerative colitis with inflammation also in my rectum.  how does a dr. decided if you are not a candidate for a j-pouch? and also, for those of you that had UC, did you later find out you had crohns also?
thanks for any input.
Diagnosed in 1999, hospitalized once.  Not responsive to meds.  Currently on 12 Asacol, , 8 ampules of Gastrocrom, 6 grams Colestid, flagyl, remicade for my UC.  Also have migraines and take B-4, B-2, for the prevention of them.
Deciding whether or not to have surgery at this time.

If you have UC then it's most likely you will be a candidate for a jpouch.  But really only a colorectal surgeon can make that call.  I had left sided UC mostly limited to my rectum and had the surgery 7 years ago.  My advice when you are ready for serious consideration is to seek a consultation with an experienced CR surgeon.  For top jpouch surgeons in your area go to www. and do a search on surgeons or post the question.  Not many UCers are turned away from jpouch surgery but again only your surgeon will know.

dx proctitis in 1987
dx UC in 1991, was stable until 1998

1998 started prednisone, asacol, pentasa, nortriptylene, ativan, 6MP, rowasa enemas and suppositories, hydrocortisone enemas, tried the SCD diet, being a vegetarian, omega 3s, flax, pranic healing, yoga, acupuncture, probiotics

2000 lost all my B-12 stores and became anemic

2001 opted for j-pouch surgery- now living life med-free
