i know that having surgery is in my future so i have a few questions.  my hope is to eventually have a j-pouch, but i know some can not.  i have left sided ulcerative colitis with inflammation also in my rectum.  how does a dr. decided if you are not a candidate for a j-pouch? and also, for those of you that had UC, did you later find out you had crohns also?

thanks for any input.

If you have UC then it's most likely you will be a candidate for a jpouch.  But really only a colorectal surgeon can make that call.  I had left sided UC mostly limited to my rectum and had the surgery 7 years ago.  My advice when you are ready for serious consideration is to seek a consultation with an experienced CR surgeon.  For top jpouch surgeons in your area go to www. j-pouch.org and do a search on surgeons or post the question.  Not many UCers are turned away from jpouch surgery but again only your surgeon will know.
