I have been having swelling on my right side just above the stoma site.  It doesn't really hurt, but I can almost feel it when it starts to swell.  It turns into a large, rather firm lump just above the stoma itself.  I know I can be really neurotic and paranoid where my ileostomy is concerned, but have any of you ever had the same thing happen??  It started about 2 weeks ago, or at least that's when I first noticed it. Could it possibly be caused by jeans that are too tight fitting??  I haven't had a follow up appointment with a surgeon since my surgery in September because I have moved to a new city and was waiting to be connected to a Dr in the area.  I have an appointment on Jan 16th so I am anxious to hear what he has to say, and if he can give me any indication of when my surgery can be reversed.  Thank you all for your support.....Cheryl

Cheryl,

Is the swelling related to the digestion of food? In other words, does it swell only after eating meals, or not related to food intake?

Hi Peggy...no it's not related to food intake.  It happens any time at all.  I can feel like a pulling sensation with a slight burning when it is swelling.  When I lie down on my back, I can't feel it anymore, just when I am standing.  Thanks for your quick reply, I am kind of bothered about it....Cheryl cry

Could it be a hernia? It goes down when you lie down ... and isn't necessarily painful. My tummy is flat when I wake up but by the time I go to bed, I've got an extra breast!

I don't think it's a hernia.  I have had 3 abdominal hernias repaired  before and this is nothing like they were!  I guess I'll just have to suck it up and wait until I can see the surgeon on the 16th. Thanks for your replies though...Cheryl

Hey Cheryl, I'm sorry to hear about your swelling. Does it hurt? I can't wait until your appointment on the 16th. I know you can't either; I want to see what he says about getting your reversal. I hope my experience hasn't scared you. I still would have the reversal even knowing about all these complications. To me it's worth it not to have a bag. I keep praying nothing goes wrong and she won't have to go back in and give me another ileostomy. I'm so glad we've been able to go through this together.
