Hi Y'all!   I am scheduled for a cat scan next Thursday and am not sure what to expect.  How do they do it when you have a stoma??  Do I have to have rectal contrast inserted?? How about IV contrast??? They told me to pick up a bottle of  "redicat"  which I have to drink beforehand.  Is this stuff gross??  I am so scared/excited as my possible ileostomy date approaches.  I don't know yet when this will be...I see my surgeon a week after the cat scan (to make sure there are no leaks I guess)...and then we go from there!!!  I have only had one previous cat scan and that was before my ileostomy so I don't know what I will be going through.... confused
Hysterectomy 1998
Diagnosed IBS 2000
Vaginal Prolapse Surgery 2001
3 Hernia Repairs, 2004
Repeat Vaginal Prolapse Surgery 2006 (the mesh from previous prolapse surgery had let go and fallen into my bowels)...
Removal of mesh from bowels (it was piercing holes all through my bowels and appendix and cecum, causing 2 fistulas and heavy bleeding vaginally and rectally)...mesh was removed, two pieces of large bowel removed and resectioned with a loop ileostomy. 2008

I have underlying connective tissue disorder (Ehlers Danloss Syndrome) which is the reason for the two failed surgeries)

The cat scan should be exactly the same as b4.
I've had 3 in the last month. Each time I had IV contrast and I drank barium a couple hours b4. Do you still have a rectum? if not you can't have rectal contrast......
But if you do, i'd guess it depends on what they're doing one for. Are they looking at your gut or something else?
I'm scheduled to have another on Monday. for example, I go in at 1:30 to drink barium and they'll scan me at 3.

Hope yours is fine!

Thanks Chassity.  Yes I still have a rectum.  They are doing the ct too see if there are any leaks or anything that would prevent reversal surgery for my ileostomy.  So, I guess then I will have to have the whole works.  I know I have to drink this stuff but I think it's the night before.  My ct is only at 3:30 in the afternoon though.  I guess I will find out when I pick it up.  Good luck with your CT scan as well!!! :-) ...Hope I'm not being too nosy, but why did you have to have so many??

Hi Cheryl! It's good to hear from you again. Don't worry about the scan, it's no big deal. Worse case scenario is the rectal contrast, I hate that but it's only because it's uncomfortable. I don't know if you have to have that or not. As for the stuff you have to drink, I had to drink some contrast before my CT scan and they mixed it with water that had fruit punch flavoring in it. This was while I was in the hospital. It wasn't bad at all, it just tasted like the fruit punch. The contrast they inject in the IV just makes you feel warm all over when it goes in, it also makes you feel like you wet your pants because it gets really warm there.

None of the scenario's are very bad. All in all I did't mind the CT scans very much compared to some of the things I had to go through!

You know I'll be thinking of you and wishing you luck!

I've had so many b/c:
I had one to find my abscesses; one to make sure no more abscesses b4 I was released again; 3rd to find my blood clot (that was last week)-they thought I might either have a perforation or blockage-NOPE ; and my next one is b/c I'm having more pain-they want to make sure no more clots and the one I have isn't causing more damage. But I'm begining to think it's muscle trauma, I hope not a hernia, but I'll admit I've been over-doing it and lifting too much. Bad Chas.

P.S.- the fruit punch stuff is barium and the IV is iodine. I don't have to drink anything the night b4, I wonder why you'd have to. Please let me know. I'm just curious now!

i wondered about this because stuff doesnt stay in us for very long, sometimes i see stuff within 45 minutes. seems like they would have to do it awful fast to make sure it was still in there.
