So I see my stoma nurse and mention my loop ileostomy.  Oh no I don't think you have a loop let me have a look.  It's definately an end ileostomy.  I thought end ileostomy's are permanent yet I'm waiting for my reversal any time soon.  All the advice I've asked for here was for a loop.  This explains why they want to open me right back up again as opposed to just going through the stoma hole.

Does anyone know anything about end ileostomy's and reversals? or any knowledge on the difference or what to expect would be great :-)   Is this why they think I will be in hospital for 10 days?  Does it really matter which it is?

hopefully a reversal around March 2009.

I don't think it will matter which you have. Either can be permanent or temporary. It just depends on the surgeon and your situation.
I've had both.
My "end" failed, so another surgeon gave me a loop.
An end ileostomy tends to be smaller and there is only one output hole.
The loop tends to be a bit larger and has two output holes. Well only one hole is for poop and the other is dormant and mucus is expelled. The loop, I think is kind of uglier. The end was nicer looking. The end was circular and my loop is more oval. The surgeon told me the loop is healthier b/c there is more blood supply to it.
That's what I know.

miss UK, that explains the longer hospital time!! You will be just fine:) Just take it easier on recover since you'll have an incision again...

Thanks both, a bit disappointing because although the surgeon said 10 days in hospital for the reversal they reckoned more like 5 at the pre assesment so now it looks more like the 10 days.  I really wanted to get out quicker I hate leaving my son.
