I had a total colectomy with ileorectal anastamosis due to colonic inertia (with complications from multiple sclerosis) on 2/25/09.  Four days after coming home I caught a nasty GI virus and had 100% liquid stool every 10ish minutes for 12 hours.  I did know that it was viral as both my children had it while I was in hospital (although not nearly as severe).  It was the first time in my life that I ever bought immodium! turn   I, thankfully, am now having 2-3 odd looking bowl movements per day.
Recovery so far seems (dare I say) good.  I plan on returning to work (I am a physical therapist) on 3/23.
Any advise or insights as to what is to come would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks and hugs to everyone going through this.

Hi there!  I'm glad you've posted and are asking questions...the information I learned here has been invaluable!

I'm so sorry you had a flu on top of the recovery.  I had a severe migraine that landed me in the ER a few days after I was home too.  Not fun.

In regards to what's ahead...just recovery.  Take it easy.  I felt the most difference after the third and fourth week post-sugery.  It's been five weeks today since my proctocolectomy and I feel wonderful!  I have very little pain...just some physical annoyance when I've been up doing too much (like running errands and being on the go).  I do find that I am still easily exhausted, so I'm going to have to start drinking coffee I think.

Whatever you have questions or concerns about, just post away!!!

Oh, but something I'm going to start doing when I go back to work or just spend time away from home, I'm going to down the fluids b/c I prefer my output to be extra liquidy so I don't have to rinse my pouch each time (which I do at home with a water bottle).  I'm also going to start using a lubricating deotorizer, so hopefully that will help keep my pouch clean while I'm away from home.   : )

Good Luck!!!

sounds like things have settled down for you!! I think 2-3 times a day is great for this point in recovery...You must have had your surgery laparoscopically...four weeks is on the soon side for going back to work!!! Don't do too much, remember that it can take your body a full year to get back to "normal"...
