Almost 2 weeks post op (sigmoid colectomy)..and all of a sudden.. I'm doubled over in pain... Am I pushing things? I've felt kind of off today, but nothing terrible. I'm not supposed to sit all day, they want me up moving..so I try and do a little more each day. Maybe I ate something wrong? I had some high fiber cereal earlier. Eating more fruits and veggies... am I'm diving in too soon? My appetite is small these days. I've lost 13.5 lbs in 2 weeks (granted I started with needing to lose 115). I was just thinking maybe my body is starting to kick in. I didn't sleep well last night either.

Maybe it's soda? Been drinking diet coke caffeine free. No more then 2/day. Maybe the soda causing too much gas?

Kaycie--what are your diet restrictions?  I am surprised you are eating a lot of fruits/veggies so soon...are they fresh?  And, if so, what kinds are you eating.  Not sitting all day just means moving around...walking...are you doing housework?  I wouldn't suggest housework at almost 2 weeks post-op, but we are all different!!

Remember to be gentle to your body!  Not only did you just have MAJOR surgery, you had a difficult time before it, too!

Take it easy and call your doc if you start vomiting/have a fever/cannot control pain....keep us posted!!!!!!

Kaycie, That does not sound good! High fiber is extremely hard on recovering bodies. So are some veggies and fruits. Hope you feel better and can figure it all out so you can tell what works well and not. I heard food journal was important.

Hang in.

Do be careful with the diet.  Sodas can cause a lot of gas, maybe lay off of them for a little while.  And so wath the fresh fruit and veggies.  No skins, no seeds and chew what you do eat extremely well.  Keep us posted.

ps  If you begin vomiting, you could have a blockage or partial blockage.  They are painful... move as much as possible.... meaning walk only.  I don't mean take a hike or anything like that tho!

Thanks guys. My doc works with some of the best surgeons in the country. I started food on Saturday, surgery was Thursday afternoon. Just liquids though. I have done fine. Eaten things that would normally tear me up. I gues I should lay off the veggies and fruits and see what happens. I'm waiting on a return call from my WOC nurse too to talk about it. My docs words were... "If something sounds good, eat it." They had a little trouble getting my gut started, but then it did. So, since then, I've been eating what I want basically. I have a follow-up in a week and he is also going to start me on Asacol (Crohn's Colitis) for maintenance.

I just doubled over again tonight..after a ham and cheese sub with lettuce, light mayo and banana peppers...so I'm going to back off it all.. maybe just get some soups for a few days and see how it goes... I took 2 percocets and it's feeling better, but not relieved. It's more gas then anything. I've really laid off the sodas...they aren't good for you anyway... moved to iced tea..and water.

Thanks all.. I'll Keep you posted once I get more info next week. My guess is it was/is gas.

Wanted to add that my stoma nurse said that since my ostomy is a colostomy and my transverse, descending, and ascending colon are all in tack...she said I wouldn't get a blockage. Now, I realize that surgery makes that swollen...so I HAVE been chewing my food very very well. I think it's a little weight loss trick too..because by the time I chew so much.. I get so much fuller so much faster!

Kaycie,

I noticed that you said that you are drinking more iced tea.. I love sweet tea!  But, it (probably the sugar and caffeine) increases my output some.  When I make it at home, I use decaf tea.  But I still like my sugar.

Glad to hear that your nurse said blockage wasn't going to be a problem for you - chew well and watch those gas producers.  If it hurts, don't eat it!  That was the recommendation I got 25 years ago!

Have a good weekend.

Thanks Peggy. Ya, I usually have decaf, but have caffeine right now. I use sweetener rather then sugar. I'm trying to drink more water though. We also drink a lot of crystal light around here too... I still could use a soda.. I've noticed since surgery, my stomach has shrunk drastically (not a bad thing), and I get so nauseated after just eating 10 or so bites. I don't feel terribly weak, so I just know it's over-eating. So, I've been eating smaller meals. Like, I'll have an egg and piece of toast for breakfast..then a mid-morning snap like string cheese or peanut butter crackers.. ya get the idea. But, when I'm borderline considering taking a phenergan, a lot of times..if I just drink about 1/2 a regular coke..I'm MUCH better. So, I think I'm going to pick up those 8oz sodas..that way I won't be able to drink much and it'll help. I drank it in the hospital and it never hurt. I think it's the other things.. I'm peeling apples still.. but I have had salads..which *might* be the culprit!

*sigh* Just so frustrated with it all. I'm hoping insurance calls me by Monday so I can order disposable bags.. I think that in itself will make me feel better. And I really want to get off pain medicine...but I think it's going to take another 2 weeks before that happens.

I am 5 weeks out and a sub with lettuce and banana peppers would KILL me.  I am still taking very low fiber and soft-ish foods.  Also the cokes are a problem for me as well.

How far are you out of surgery, you might be pushing things a bit too quickly - you have had major surgery.

I hope you feel better.
