My WOC nurse said no to gas-x.. but I can feel my stoma "farting" and pooping at the same time and it's RELIEF! I'm in agony to an extent..I seem to have my moments... moments where I can go 11 hours without pain meds...and then only 6. I don't know! I want to scream.

Any advice? Can someone lead me to a list of gassy foods? I haven't had anything but water and crackers and 2 things of string cheese in the last 16 hours... wondering if I should cut out ALL dairy?

why did they say no to gas-x? I use it all the time! my nurses in the hosptial said it wouldnt help, but the dr said it would, and it does!

anyway part of your problem might bethat you havent had any food. Like if i get hungry (like i am right now) when i eat in a few minutes i am gonna have gas.
Also, sodas, veggies, some fruits, drinking from a straw, spicy things all those can cause gas, esp since you aren't very far out from surgery.

Also, if you can stand it incision pain wise, lay on your left side. You can als do like you do with babies and pump your legs up and down to your chest, but that might hurt your tummy.

Hope you feel better!

Kaycie-- UOAA has some great downloadable pages about foods. I highly suggest visiting their site and getting the food reference card as it lists foods that cause gas, odor, etc.. Also, ostomyland.com has some great references too.

Like summerstorm, if I don't eat, I get gas and lots of liquid output. Left side is good as is kneading/massaging your tummy. I also use gas-x and it's a saving grace. hmmm. . . mb check with surgeon?

good luck.

PS. we're in this together today. I woke up with some nasty cramping that seems to get worse as I eat. mb dehydrated?

Thanks guys. Just one of those days where my goal is to get a shower and sleep. Just staying on top meds.

Can I drink water from a straw? I drink more of it that way. SURELY that won't cause gas? Everything else I sip.

I'll check out UOAA later... hubby went to get me potato soup and bread from Panera.

And, I see my surgeon Friday, so I'll ask him about gas-x and explain the WOC nurse said no.

yes, anything through a straw will cause gas mad   You don't realize how much air you take in when sucking...gum does the same thing!

For me, I found that staying away from foods made with a lot of yeast helps with the gas issue.  I LOVE bread and don't even buy it so I am not tempted skull

The Gas X has been my saviour - I use the new Gas X strips that disolve on the tongue - that seems to exert control very quickly.

Good Luck

Ok guys...yesterday was a bit better...but I hardly ate anything! Not that I'm starving anyway!

I had potato soup, bread, 1.5 slices of pizza (i know, bad! but I can EAT it now without the terrible pain I used to get), and drank water through a straw like a fish... Not sure how or why it was ok, but onto another day.

Now, I just need to hop over to UOAA and check that all out.
