I had a procto-sigmoid colectomy. My stool is SOOO firm some days. Normal? I guess I preferred it a little loose because it allowed it to drop out of the stoma and into the bag.

Ok, so, that said, I feel like I'm constantly holding my stoma and pushing the poop down! What the heck?

Can anyone help?

Also, I'm getting ready to get disposable bags, not that it really matters.

Maybe I just need to get up and move more and drink more water in order for this to start un-firming just a bit?

Maybe a stool softener, like Dulcolax, would help, too.

Never thought of that! I'll check with my surgeon tomorrow. He doesn't like colace long-term, but maybe until I get regulated it'll be ok. I pulled up the list of foods that help to thicken, loosen, odor, etc. Problem is, everytime I have the foods to loosen..they are eating me apart with gas!!
