This is new. I had no idea you could have physical therapy to learn how to move your bowels.
I had my subtotal colectomy/J Pouch almost 2 years ago. Had complications a week later and had to get an ileostomy. Ileostomy reversal was a year ago. Things were FANTASTIC for several months. I was going at least 7 times a day. I could literally fell myself emptying out. It was the very first time in my life I could go to the bathroom with no problems.
But then gradually things started slowing up. I was still going to the bathroom but only about 4 times a day. And most of the times I had to really strain hard to get anything to come out. And even then it wasn't much. The scary thing is I have tried EVERYTHING to get myself going. Miralax, enemas, stool softners, fiber, mineral oil, etc....Nothing is working. This is how things were before my surgery. I figure, I have no colon so if I take a laxative, that should get things moving again. But it didn't. Had a CT Scan done and it showed I was super constipated. Then had an MRI/defecography and it showed the J Pouch loooked good. Then had a Flex Sigmoidoscopy with rectal biopsy and that came back "inconclusive". Basically she said the pathologists wanted her to do a "deeper" biopsy of the rectum.
But in the meantime, she wants me to try physical therapy. She said there were certain exercises constipated people can do to help themselves go. Has anybody here tried physical therapy for constipation? Especially after having colectomies. Did it work?

I have had a TC and emergency ileostomy....if you read my signature it gives some sort of clue to my story. I tried biofeedback for three months prior to my emergency ileostomy from a obstruction caused by anismus of the rectum. I have had 4 opinions....since my ileostomy I have had a successful defecography and sigmoidoscopy. It is all inconclusive besides the dx of anismus is not not appearing at the time. They have no idea why it developed after the total colectomy. I am currently facing a reversal at the end of this month and have been going though biofeeback once again. This time there is some success in it, but before it did nothing. It is generally successful in 50 percent of patients. I also tried botox injections to relax the rectum as well. If you have any questions you can read some of my recent posts in the TC section that describes my therapy in detail.
Hope this helps.
