During surgery 2/3 my surgeon discovered I have a hernia above the stoma. He said he'll repair it during takedown.   When I asked he said he doesn't use mesh; I've forgotten his reasoning.

If you've had one repaired, what did your surgeon do and what was the reasoning?

I also found out he'll close the stoma site with pursestring sutures and I know lots have it left open and packed.  He seemed to imply leaving it open was old thinking.  Anyone have any opinions?  Silly question, I can practically see the fingers flexing.  lol

I had a peristomal hernia repaired when I had my reversal done March 9th.  He did it all through the stoma site.  He didn't use mesh either and he said that was because he didn't want the bowels sticking to the mesh while I was still healing.  He said I would probably have to have it repaired again at a later date.  I now have a much larger hernia around the same area. Duh...go figure huh?  Now I am waiting for surgery to have it repaired again....this time he is using a mesh.  He also did my sutures to close stoma site with purse-like drawstring stitches.  I thought it would look horrible when he removed them and it had healed, but you know it is just the neatest little scar...barely visible!  Good luck!  Hope I answered some of your questions! turn Cheryl
