My husband has an ileostomy since last Nov. He is schedule for surgery nextmonth to address some remaining complications ie draining abscess and insisional hernia, his bowel had perforated and he had septic shock therefore his belly wound had to heal his without being stitched up and used a vac dressing. not sure if that caused the hernia or what but it is there. My question though is about low iron, the hospital ran blood work to perpare for surgery and found him is iron level quite low, he is going to have a couple of interveinous treatments or iron at the hospital in order to get his levels up and hopefully avoid transfussion after surgery. Anyone else have low iron or this experience. He is quite tired his RBC is 124 which is not that low. The tell his it can be difficult to keep his iron up with an ileostomy. Has anyone have iron given to them by this method?

My son had numerous iron infusions (venafer). It was easy and painless and quite fast...IV runs for about an hour. Nothing to worry about.

I have low iron and I take iron and B12 shots once every month or 6 weeks. They help a lot. I haven't been able to go to normal pills yet. I do feel more energetic after I have them. Good luck with them.
