My 2nd of 3 steps for the J-Pouch is being done at 7:30 am Thursday morning. I'm very excited to get it done and over with. Its the last majorly invasive surgery for me, and puts me a lot closer to being done. Ive also had to deal with a pretty severe case of Proctitis in the leftover portion of rectum that was left in place from the initial surgery. So with this next surgery that goes away, and I'm hoping to finally be able to live pain free and more importantly, pain pill free.

Thank you to everyone on this forum. Your support has been life saving.

Hey John we will all be thinking of you on Thursday. My son will be doing the exact same thing the end of January so we are anxious to hear how things go and how the recovery is compared to the first surgery. What preparations do you have to, if any, before Thursday?

Wishing you all the best....

Thank you all for the well wishes. I dont have any prep. I asked several times, and every time the answer was no. I just recently read somewhere that the main reason people with ileostomy's dont prep is because stuff flows out so not eating for 12 hours will clean you out, and prepping would dehydrate you severly.

Anyways, I cant wait to get it all over with. Its not gonna be fun getting ready for surgery, and the first couple days after I wake up, but it has to be done. I will try to post back as soon as I can.

Best of luck to you, John! I'm scheduled for step 2 of 3 on the 21st. They gave me prep work though - enemas and the mirilax prep. I wonder why that is?

Keep us posted on how the recovery process goes!

Gemen sunset, double check with your surgeon about the prep. It's probably a mistake as you shouldn't need it.

Surgery went really really well. I'm in much better health than I was last time. One day after I was already standing. I do wonder when my foley will come out. Pain is pretty excruciating, but I think it's mostly because of my tollerance to opiates.

My rectum was still inflamed from colitis, so there is a small chance th jpouch won't heal properly. If that happens I'll end up with a perm ostomy. I seriously doubt that will happen though.

That's about it. I should go home in 5 days or so.

Glad things went well! I will ask my dr about the prep. I too have UC inflammation in my rectum. I started on Canasa Friday night and I haven't had any bleeding since. I'm hoping that'll give my jpouch a fighting chance. Keep us posted on your progress and recovery!

This will probably be my final update on this topic for a while. I wanted to let everyone know that my doctor has cleared me to go home tomorrow. He would have let me go home today, but I figured there was no rush. Tomorrow will only be the 5th day, and usually people stay 7-10 for this surgery. The doctor also removed the drain from the newly formed J-Pouch.

Word of warning. He says "This wont hurt at all. 1.....2....3..." Yike!!!. It hurt like hell, but only for about 5 seconds. It caught me off guard, causing a knee jerk which actually hit him in the arm; Ooops.

Anyways, I'm progressing really fast, and I'm pretty happy. Just got to keep my fingers crossed that the J-pouch heals properly over the next 3 months. Assuming it does, Ill have the reversal at that time, and my life will be complete.
