He should be fine to return to school after 6 weeks. He might have higher frequency but it will get better with time. The most important bit of knowledge for him is to be PATIENT. Expect to see improvement in function every 6 weeks, not days. Have him keep a food diary. Some foods (like fresh fruits and vegetables) might zip though him and cause discomfort but its temporary. Or it might not. Everyone's recovery is different. Also introduce him to metamucil wafers and imodium or lomotil. These will help slow the bowel and absorb excess liquid.
