Hello,

I have had a bag for two and a bit weeks now and I am sort of handling it. I get frustrated because I want to get it right but I know that the first few weeks are experimental anyway. I find the whole thing quite funny most of the time yet....I do get fustrated with the air in the bag which can build up sometimes. It keeps coming back. It is so annoying. (any tips. lol)

Though I did go underwear shopping today to get some good stuff to support the bag. (so it doesn't flap about. :D) It was a good run.....i did get tired but it is all to aid me in getting stronger.

I mean this whole thing has made me better and I can eat all the foods I could not before due to the bad crohn's. Ok I am young but that wont stop me. At least that is what I keep saying to my self.

Though I am not to sure if there is anyone who could answer my question but.....how many times a day should I empty my bag? or get rid of the annoying wind........maybe I am eating too my chocolate...heehee :D

welcome to the forum! You'll get a lot of answers here:)

The gas will get better with time and it will depend a lot on what you eat. You could keep track with a food diary until you know what does it. Then you can either plan for it or not eat those foods:)

I empty around 4-6 times a day. Usually closer to 4 but I've really refined my diet to foods that I feel good eating...but if I drink coffee, it's a lot more!!!!

There are also ostomy pouches with filters which will help. They aren't great (liquid output makes them fail) but they do help.

Make sure you are chewing well and you can always take gas-x to help until things settle down.

some days i empty 6 or 8 times, if i eat alot more than usual. And esp at first i emptied alot more, if i eat a normal amount its like 4 or 5 times. idont really count though.
and you havent had it very long at all, so you are gonna have lots of gas at first. Letting yourself get hungry will make the gas much worse.
i dont know what kind of undies, you got, and im not sure by your name if you are male or female, but if you are female, jcpenneys has a brand called flrtitude and they have cute undies i wear the hipsters and they do a really great job. Also the ambrielle is good, but theyseem to wear out quickly where the tail rubs inside. And maidenform has a hipster thats good, but they are more expensive and not as cute.

Hi,

It took me a while to get the right system- I use Hollister.   The stuff they put on in the hospital was terrible; big clip and clear bag.  Yuck.  Now I use the "lock and roll" bag which has a velcro closure.  I tried the bag with the filter because I like to drink carbonated water but I found that the pressure of the underwear pushed the filter part right onto the stoma and that hurt like hell.   Plus I found it didn't really do what it was supposed to.

I have always emptied at least 10 times per day but that's partly because I'm paranoid about leaks and because my ileo is so high that it's liquid all the time.   By the way, I tape around the flange so that if a leak is threatening, I can usually feel it creeping and get to it in time.

Connie~Have you tried the Sure Seal Ring to help hold the wafer tape down? It's breathable and waterproof so your skin can breathe and your tape doesn't get wet when you shower! I've been using them for quite a while and the leak I had was controlled (and nothing got wet) until I got it changed:) I'd highly recommend asking your supplier for a sample!!!!

Thanks Ohio76!  I'll see if I can get that seal at the hospital pharmacy.  I've only got three more weeks to wait, as of today, before my reversal.  But who's counting :)   I may just ride it out with what I'm used to but I wish I had asked sooner.  I appreciate the tip for sure and I hope others will too.

Hey :) lol having an ostomy can be funny sometimes! I remember one day my grandma was helping me change my bag and all the sudden you see it shoot up and hit the sink. She just looked at me and we cracked up laughing..that thing could shoot SO far it amazed me. As for the tiredness..I couldne even make my bed for the first month without sitting down and resting bc i was out of breath and sweating too bad hahaha but that all gets better with time :D
