hi everyone!

well i have a presurgical workup on 4/13 and if all goes well im already scheduled for a colectomy on 4/19.

my question is: how long can i expect to be recovering from this surgery? im having it done laparoscopically. im also quite young (26) and in good physical shape. i know it will take a long time to really get back to being able to do everything i want to do. but im just wondering how long until i can go back to work. im a vet tech but work will allow me to just sit and answer phones if necessary.

also- ive heard people mentioning the total colectomy posts 1,2,3 etc. how do i view those? i may be young, but im AWFUL at anything to do with computers and i get lost trying to find stuff. im amazed i even got my account set up for this forum :)

if anyone has any info thanks in advance for sharing it with me.

HI!
I'm an RVT too!
I had complications, but if i hadn't, i imaging i would've gone back to work in 4-6 weeks. That's IF you're only going to be answering phones. No doggy lifting for a while! i think it was 8 weeks b4 i went back to full physical labor (i was 27-28 yrs during my surgeries-i had a birthday in between stuff). Luckily, scrubs are really comfortable clothing to wear for recovery.

But, everyone's different and it's important to keep in mind that you canNOT rush things. You'll only end up hurting yourself. So, if you were going to warn your clinic, i'd let them know 8 weeks and you'll be back sooner if you can. AND you may still be on pain meds when you come back. But, it wasn't anything i couldn't function on. I was ultra careful to not take any paws to the gut. And no lifting over 15lbs for a while (can't remember specifically).

Hello D,  well I just had my total colectomy on Feb 19, but they cut right through all my ab muscles so its taking me longer to recover.  I felt great the min I got out of recovery, I new that it was the first day of the rest of my life...get back to a life,  I have been ill with this for so long, its like heaven feeling so good.   The first 3 weeks were a bit trying but I got out of the hospital after 7 days and had to go back in 2 days later for 3 days due to gas that was built up and vomiting all day and night with nausea out of control, I was told that I had more problems with nausea then most.

You will probably be out and about trying to do to much in weeks due to having it laporoscopically...spelled that wrong but hey, you get the idea.

Good news is that you will be eating before you leave the hospital.  My doc told me 3 months before I have good enough energy and a full year to fully recover.

But I go and do sm things as I get tired easily and my incision gets to aching really bad...but I feel great, and itching to do more...but have to be patient.

You will do great, why are you having one at such a young age, ???     What do you have CI ?

I will send lods of prayers your way, but your young and I am 53 so I made it and you will too.

Hi d!
I just had my colectomy on March 18th, and I am doing well. I am incredibly weak, mostly because I was down to 92 lbs before I had the surgery and was really sick with my colitis, but otherwise my recovery is going well. I had my surgery done laproscopically as well and that really has helped speed my recovery. I don't know when I'll be going back to work, but honestly if your work will let you just answer phones, I feel like if you're in good health right now, you probably could go back within 4 weeks. I mean, each person is different and you'll have to talk to your dr, but it shouldn't be too bad as long as you don't have any complications.
