I had extra colon (3-4 feet) from years of high fiber, got twisted (volvulus) and blocked, have temp colostomy while colon shrinks back. No other health issues as far as I know, surgeon left extra in there for the reattachment so I will have a normal colon length. haven't found ANYONE on any site with the same issue- would love to hear from anyone who has and especially the reattachment-time frame, success rate, etc. Thanks in advance.

Usually if the colon is truly redundant they take out the redundant part to prevent future volvulvus. This was not my issue, but in research I did for my own issue, I did read this about volvulvus. Have never heard of them leaving in the redundant part. Sorry can't be of much help. good luck.

I have/had an extremely redundant colon.. my transverse and sigmoid. It was so redundant, the barium enema took over 2-1/2 hours - and they could not complete and view the whole colon because it was so redundant. Long story short - my sigmoid was twisted and prolapsed - causing an outlet obstruction. They removed the entire sigmoid, but left the remaining colon - including the redundant and prolapsed transverse. I was in the hospital 9 days, recovery was really not difficult. I still suffer from chronic constipation and have other outlet issues (not related to the remaining redundant colon or missing sigmoid).. but the twisted and blocked area is no longer an issue...

Chronic Constipation - last 20+ yrs.
Stage lll Pelvic Floor Prolapse ( rectocele, rectal, vaginal, bladder) Rectopexy, Sacral Colpopexy, TVT Sling - 8+ hr surgery - March 2009
Constipation increased, could not move bowels without excessive straining or laxatives - March 2009
TVT Sling Released - April 2009
Redundant, Twisted, Prolapsed colon found - causing mechanical obstruction Oct. 2009
Rectosigmoid Colectomy w/low anterior Anastomosis & Revised Rectopexy - Dec. 2009
Perineorrhaphy & Posterior Colporrhaphy (rectocele repair) - Dec. 2009
Today - using MiraLax daily, but still struggle to have a BM :(
