Well, I had my colectomy in December and the j-pouch was created and I had an ileostomy on my lower right side. My surgeon had difficulty stretching my small intestine far enough, so my stoma was recessed and impossible to keep a bag on without leaks. My skin became very damaged and we ended up doing to takedown after only 10 days. I was not healed enough, and the staple line or sutures or whatever probably broke through and I ended up with a rectal/vaginal fistula (well, pouch/vaginal really). It leaked so much and was incredibly painful. We had no other option except to go in and do another ileostomy. This one was on the upper left side. It was higher in the intestine than most are and I had a lot of problems with high output and dehydration. We waited a couple of months and did another takedown. Now I am using the J-Pouch since March 31. Luckily, the fistula healed on its own and I haven't had a re-occurence

in buffalo, New York
please do not think what happened was my surgeon's fault. the fact that he could not pull the small intestine far enough in the first surgery was the fault of my own anatomy and not his skill level
