For all those who are about to have a subtotal colectomy, with illiorectal anastomosis or have already had one, here is some information you might find extremely useful. Everything I post here was learned (sometimes painfully) through my own experience of trial and error over the past two years. I FINALLY FIGURED IT ALL OUT!!
After my operation, I literally had to move my bowels 20 to thirty times a day. It was horrible, always planning ahead, figuring out where every available bathroom was during my entire day etc etc. After much experimentation, and I am not saying that this will work for you, but it has changed my life for the better, here is my routine:
As soon as I wake in the morning, I drink 1 Activa yogurt followed by 3 Imodium caplets, (6mg). In exactly 6 hours from this time, I take an additional 2 caplets of Immodium (4mg). Approximately 4 hours after this, I take 1 caplet of Immodium (2mg). Before bed, I take 1caplet Immodium (2mg) and a lite Vodka (3 oz) and Gatorade (10 oz) mixed beverage over ice. The vodka relaxes all your muscles (including your bowels) and provides a very good sleep without the hangover.

Breakfast is usually a bowl of Rice Chex with Almond milk or soy milk. NO COFFEE. Sub Green tea.

Lunch is grilled fish, lean hamburger, steak, or pasta, peanut butter and jam, sushi, turkey, a side of steamed veggies.

Dinner is a light snack, rice crackers, toast with eggs, fruit, etc.
Avoid fried or processed foods, junk food, ultra salty is also a no no.

From day one, you will notice a incredible change in bathroom habits. I am down to less than 6 times a day. When you have to go, it will be painless, more formed stools and with less urgency. Some days, I go hours and hours without feeling the need. The mornings and hour after waking will be the largest stools and urgency, but hey, at least you are still at home. I wish you all the best of luck and hope that this works for you. I have my life back!!!
