Hi everyone!
Now that I've had my colon removed I really want to enjoy some fruits for once. I know for things like apples and pears you have to remove the skin...i've done that so far and am LOVING being able to eat new things!

My question is what kinds of fruits will I never be able to eat? Can I eat strawberries or are those seeds too dangerous in terms of an obstruction? I miss them!!

Thanks in advance, guys :)

you can eat strawberries!
about two months after surgery, i went for about three days and ate nohting but strawberry shortcake! i was so happy to be able to eat it. No problems with the stoma, but horrible heartburn after the 5th or 6th one, lol.

With pineapple and oranges, spit out the stringy parts, dont do that unless you are at home of course, lol.
I dont eat grapes, but when i eat muscadines or sccuperdines i just suck out the middle and spit out the seeds, again only at home, lol.
Bananas will thicken your output so they are good for that.
Just try a little bit of a fruit at a time, and if it gives you trouble, wait a bit and try again.

I love fruit, too! Lately, I've been into canteloupe and watermelon. Fruit is fine to eat, just cut off the skin (if it's tough, like an apple) and chew it really well. Like summerstorm said, if it's pineapple or oranges, eat the juicy part and spit out the tough part. Or you can always juice them. Strawberries have never given me a problem either.

Enjoy! :-)

We were told nothing like that for the first 6 weeks, while the colon is still inflamed, but after that time (and you are past that) you should be good to go. Just start out slow..try a couple ...not like summerstorm with her 6 strawberry shortcakes...lol...:) (I bet they tasted great though!)

Definitely eat strawberries :-) They shouldn't give you problems (as long as you chew them...lol!)

I eat skins...but I don't go crazy...and when I do eat them I usually cut up pieces of fruit and then chew. That way I know the pieces are already smaller and shouldn't cause issues shocked

Not every food agrees with everyone so try what you want in moderation and only try one item at a time...enjoy the taste testing!!!

yeah ohio made a good point about cutting them smaller, for the first two years or so, i ate the shredded lettuce, like you use on tacos or whatever, that way, it started out as smaller pieces. And i still tear my lettuce up into smaller pieces, or eat tiny bites.

Is diet more limited with a temporary loop ileostomy? Just curious...I don't want to suffer with any blockages because of a bad food choice....

Im not sure if the loop has anything to do with it, but if you are only going to have it for 2 months or so, you would need to be more careful, it takes a while before your body can start to work like they shoudl, and most of hte time the dr will put you on a low residue diet for 6 weeks.

Stephanie   Ok girl you had your surgery the day before mine....wow don't push your luck to early...I hear that oranges, bananna, and so much more that could give you heck...Mother Hen should really tell you the whole thing.

So How are you feeling ?  I am feeling really good, getting a little bit of strength back...

Here is something OMG I have not done anything physical since well before my surgery or after till the other day...so I went to my moms and did some weedeating, came home and washed window, most of them not all, cuz I was wore out and it was hot that day...but by that evening I could not lift a glass of water and it was hard to text on my phone...my poor muscles in my arms were hurting and so weak...so flash forward 3 days later, now I can lift again......wow,  I could not believe how weak I am and no muscles...got to get a handle on that.....going to have to WORK IT.... feel well my dear.

I was feeling GREAT for the first two months. Just about a week ago, though, I started feeling all diarrhea-y again. I went to the GI today and they're running some tests. Really hope it's an infection and not the Crohn's coming back already.

I was incredibly weak after my surgery as well (92 lbs on the day I went in!) but have gained 20 lbs since the surgery and worked very hard so I could go back to work (I dance every day so I had to work out to get back into shape). I've been back at work for about 3 weeks now and I'm so glad to be back. I have been eating bananas since the surgery, and have had baked apples as well. I tried a bit of a pear (without the skin) and everything was fine, and whenever this diarrhea crap goes away I will try a bit of a strawberry (maybe cut up in some rice krispies...? Yum!).

I have found that I don't do well if I eat Pineapple and Bananas but other that that if I don't eat too much of one thing at once then I am fine. Oh, I know not a fruit but Peanuts!! Oh dear, I ate too many once and had to go to hospital because I caused myself a bit of a blockage. I have learned my lesson lol.

what do bananas do to you?
I found the weirdest thing about them, if i eat just one, i get horible gas and indgegestion and have to lay down, but if i eat two, it doesnt bother me! how odd is that!
And with peanuts, i havent tried eating them alone, but i did eat part of a snickers, like one tiny bite, lol.

Summer, I find that Banana clogs me up, really slows output and I end up with a swollen stoma and the area on my tummy around the stoma area becomes hard as if all the banana is struggling to get through. It does move eventually but I prefer to avoid Banana's. Similar happens with pineapple.

That is strange Summer that you can eat two but not one lol. A good thing if you like Bananas :-)

I love peanuts and so does my Husband. He buys a great big bag and then leaves them around, the temptation is too much sometimes and I just have to have some lol. I do have really restrict how many I eat though.

try eating bananas and apples together, or bananas and some type of juice, then it would loosen up the output, maybe

Urgh, nothing I eat actually makes the output thicker....and boy have I tried. Oscar has been giving me runny poop's the last few weeks but I think maybe it's because I have changed my "see and eat everything" diet to a much more sedate "I have to get into a sea foam green bridesmaid's dress in June" diet *cringe*

you might have seen it on tv, its on an informercial, i couldnt afford the whole thing so i bought one of the discs off tv, the polymetric circuit one.
Its so hard, that the people in the video, the ones showing you what to do, lay down in the floor in the middle! Seriously. I lost ten lbs ina week doing it and cutting out sodas and junk food.
I dont think i can post the link cause of advertising and stuff, but just google it
It's called Insanity workout.

I have made it all the way three times now without laying down in the floor! And i was not in good shape to begin with, but honestly, its worth the hard work. I wish i had the 150 to get the whole thing.
