Now that is the question. I hate that I always feel like I can smell myself unless it's only been a few hours since I changed my wafer. Sometimes even when the bag is empty, I swear I smell poo. My husband and my mom say they can't smell it so I usually believe them but I hate that sometimes I'm probably more awkward around people just because I'm sure they can smell me.

I use a pouch with a filter so I know that it's less likely I smell but sometimes my pants cause the poo to get smooshed onto the filter and then it just doesn’t matter what I do, the filter isn't self cleaning so then I can really smell it. These are the times when I'm most worried about other people being able to notice the smell. Luckily if it happens at work it's usually at the end of the day and I work in a cube farm so I have a little aroma therapy jar that I hope helps. Though, sometimes scented things can just make the poo smell festive- like apple-cinnamon flavored poo.

Has anyone who didn't know you have an ostomy ever noticed a smell and said something? Tell me your smelly belly stories please. It's a slow day at work and I really need to feel like I'm not alone here.

3-9-10: Total protectomy and Sigmoid colostomy installed. Haven't spent more than 3 minutes on the toilet since- it's fantastic! Now I'm just waiting to get regulated so I can irrigate.

you dont really smell it most likely its in your mind! I used to do that at first too, i was constanty thinking people smelled me,all the time. And going up to my husband saying, smell me!
Here is what i did to figure out if i actually smelled or just thought i did (don't laugh, lol)
Go in the bedroom, make sure its not next to where you just emptied, take your pants off (this sounds dirty, lol) get under the covers and pull them all the way over you, head completly covered and put yourself in the fetal postion, where you are really close to it.
Now breathe in really hard, andif you can still smell, then you may have a slight smell, and even then, if you have to go through all that to actually really smell it, then noone else can!
But if you think you have a smell, you can check your wafer really good, or wash your pouch out with a mixture of water and mouthwash, that makes it feel minty fresh! :D

I have used 3% hydrogen peroxide in my bag for years. I put a few drops in after every empty and it makes such a difference, even when I have eaten fish!
Never use stronger than 3% though as it could burn. I have also used Mouthwash like Summer does but I don't wash out the bag with it I put a few drops in and leave it. There is a product I would like to get which is very strong minty smelling. I tried a little of my friends a few weeks back and it was really good, only need one drop as it is so powerful that I felt I was walking around smelling like toothpaste all day. I can't remember name of it, I will have to ask her.

Couldn't help giggling at your under the covers to check out the smell Summer lol. Great idea though.

I don't have an ostomy yet, but I have read that many people say a filter sometimes makes the smell worse???? Have you tried m9 drops? I am ordering some of those when I get my ostomy.

I'm thinking it's mostly in my head...but sometimes I wonder.

suzy-i told you it was silly, lol.

The filters only cause problems IF they arent working correctly, which doesnt happen often, or if you leave the bag on to long.

The only time I've ever smelt any poo smell from my husband's bag was when the velcro on his shorts opened the bag by mistake - first thing in the morning (watery) and poo went all over the floor. Fun times!!!

Rest of the time, can't smell anything. I'm sure it's all in your head xx

I know how you feel, I also think I can smell mine all the time and constantly ask my family if they can smell me too and the I get the same response that you do and that its they can't smell a thing. I still swear I can smell it though lol. But everyday I make sure I wear a nice perfume. I have tried the mouthwash and found it smelt like minty poo, it made me feel ill so I dont go for that anymore. The best product I have found so far is Adapt lubricating deordorant.

Hollister M9 deodorizer drops are the best! They completely eliminate any odor. If you still smell poo after putting those drops in, then maybe check the bottom of your shoe to see if you stepped in some doggie doo. smilewinkgrin

The first thing I did when I came home from my colectomy/ileostomy was watch my dog when she came to see me on the couch. She did not smell my pouch area. She never has. Do you have a dog or a friend with a dog? That's the real test.

I use "EZ vent" pouch vents. No worry about filter smells.

.... yes, I do (smell that is ;) ) ... I was sitting at work yesterday and realized a little odor of doodie. I couldn't quite tell if it was me or the guy's feet next to me, but it was bothering me and I was getting a little self-conscious. So I got home, went to sleep had the covers over me because I set the A/C to penguin exhibit, and did the test summerstorm suggested above and almost vomited. I didn't realize there was a little leak under the hypafix bandage on the lower part of the wafer. I had to rub my fingers around it and then I quickly realized I had to change it at like 3am this morning. Hooray! Good news is I am getting faster at changing my stuff.
