My husband had his rectum removed laparoscopically last Monday (5 days ago).  He is having pain whenever he is up and moving for any length of time.  When he is sitting the pain is better.  I told my husband that he should rest and take it easy (not easy for him) for a few weeks.   The doctor has given him Vicodin to relieve the pain.  What type of activity should he be doing now since surgery was only five days away?  What would be considered too much activity?  He will listen to all of you!!!

Nancy, I had a subtotal colectomy w/ fecal diversion, temporary loop ileostomy, June 21....12 days ago. My doctor told me 6 weeks to heal. I am allowed to walk as much as I want to, but not allowed to do any household chores. I am not supposed to lift anything greater than 10lbs for 6 weeks.

Tell your husband to take it easy and that he only gets one chance to heal properly! I admit, this is very boring....one can only watch so much TV, but this is only temporary. Make sure he takes his pain meds on time so that the pain doesn't get ahead of him.

I had an open total proctocolectomy and my surgeon would not discharge any of his patients until they had walked a charted mile in the hospital. We were also sent home with instructions to keep walking. Your husband needs to balance the pain/activity within reason. I don't think it's healthy to sit or lie around all day but he also shouldn't be pushing to fatigue. Some pain is a normal part of recovery.
