My husband had is rectum removed and anus closed a week ago.  It's hard to know what it is suppose to look like so hopefully someone here can help.  It looks like they stitched the end of his anus.  To me it looks  like a red intestine turned inside out.  It appears to be very tender.  Obviously my husband is having pain sitting down.  Will this area start to shrink as time goes or will it always appear that he has a "red buldge" between his legs?  I've been trying to find pictures online to show me so I know what is "normal".

i have no idea what it looked like, since i couldnt see it myself, but i can feel it now, and it feels like a ridge thing back there. Not that i walk around feeling it or anything, lol.

Today marks 12 days home from having proctectomy and end colostomy done.

They said they left 1 inch of rectom/anus and it is swollen, puckered. I assume this is still swollen from the surgery with all the internal swelling and etc. I hope in the next week or so it will go back to normal.

I got the 2 drains out yesterday and I feel so good now. No more pain and no more 15 - 30 trips to the bathroom per day.

I'm going to be a grandma in February. Life is good!!!

Nancy, that's a great question for his follow-up visit with his surgeon.

Nancy,
I never had a red, swollen bulge after my rectum was removed. It was a deep, open area that I packed with saline-filled gauze twice a day, so that it wouldn't get infected. It healed slowly from the inside out. I would ask the surgeon to look at your husband's backside to let you know if that's normal.

Daisy,
Congratulations on a successful surgery and on becoming a grandma! You're going to feel GREAT by the time you meet the little one in February. :-)

Take care,
Cecilia

Nancy - be sure to let us know what the doctor says.

I am hoping mine shrinks back to normal. After 3 surgeries in 1 year I am very disappointed in the lack of information they send you home with.

I've have learned so much from these discussion boards. I don't know what I would have done without them.

Best wishes to you and your husband.
