Hello.   I have a jpouch now.   Had takedown,  and now doin fairly well...however just feel like some things are just still not quite normal.  I am 98% better than when I had full UC, but  There are times I almost feel kind of like I still have UC,  I asked my colorectal surgeon if I still have UC or not.  He said no, initially, then said well,  about this much UC (indicating about an inch or so).   I still have part of my rectum which has UC question is:   Can I flare in that small amount of UC rectum??  What ya think?

Hi Christine, I'm sure the experts will have better advice (my daughter has pancolitis, i don't have UC) but I think that's called cuffitis. I think it's easily treatable with a suppository.

What kind of surgery did you have?  So are you now re-connected?  Hope your doing well.

It sounds to me as if your surgeon left your rectal cuff and if so then yes, you may still get UC-like symptoms in that tiny portion of remaining tissue. You can treat that area with UC meds, both oral and suppositories or enemas. My rectal cuff was stripped so I no longer have any UC issues. My understanding is that many surgeons choose not to strip the cuff as it's very easy to render the patient incontinent. Only very very experienced surgeons will strip.

dx proctitis in 1987
dx UC in 1991, was stable until 1998

1998 started prednisone, asacol, pentasa, nortriptylene, ativan, 6MP, rowasa enemas and suppositories, hydrocortisone enemas, tried the SCD diet, being a vegetarian, omega 3s, flax, pranic healing, yoga, acupuncture, probiotics

2000 lost all my B-12 stores and became anemic

2001 opted for j-pouch surgery- now living life med-free
