To those of you who were on prednisone at the time of your surgery....what taper were you on following surgery? My surgeon suggests 5 mgm per week but the endocrinologist in the hospital suggested a much slower taper. Could this be because I was prednisone dependant for such a long time? I was on prednisone since January....up and down on the doses...usually starting at 40 mgm but as soon as my taper got down to 7.5 I would flare and have to go back up to 40 and start all over again. I can't wait to get off this drug as it is playing havoc with my blood glucose levels.

I tapered to 20mg for surgery and then 5 mg a week but Im back on it due to my arthritis kicking up a fuss. I have always read and heard that most ppl do 5 but what is ur weight, blood work, health, other health conditions? What else do you take? Good luck and wish you a long happy life. Celine

My son was on 20mg when he left the hospital. He tapered by 5 mg every 10 days.

I would mention to your surgeon what the endocrinologist said and see what the surgeon has to say. I believe the standard answer is to taper 5 mg every week or two. Your surgeon may not have remembered how long you have been on prednisone.
