I'm half Polish and so is my husband.  I wasn't sure how to spell it, so I just spelled gawumki the way it is pronounced.  I didn't eat the cabbage, just the meat..lol.  I make mine in the pressure cooker.  I attemped pierogi a few times but they came out like hand grenades, so figured I would stick with Mrs. T's.    Mom and I used to make chrushiki (not sure of that spelling either), but my daughters never want to help me make those and they are too much work.
Where did you grow up?  We're from Camden, NJ but have lived in Bellmawr since 1971.
Ulcerative Proctitis since Sept of 1998. Hospitalized for eight days. Prednisone, Asacol, Rowasa enemas. Two year remission. Flare..switched from Asacol to Colazal. Two year remission. Started 6MP in 2002. Flared yearly from 2003 to May of 08. Hospitalized for ten days in May of 08. Flaring more often since. Off 6MP. Remicade failed. Humira failed. Total colectomy with perm. ileo .

All four of my grandparents came here from Poland.
I was born in 1944 and grew up in Dearborn, MI. Just last March I sold the house I was born and grew up in. I now live in Gladwin, up north in Michigan. I work for the federal government in the social security department. I don't know what they think I do, but they send me a check every month.

Diagnosed with UC 1974 at 30 years old. Kept in total remission with Azulfidine. 2002 getting a “paunch”. Wife read coffee causes a paunch. Stopped drinking coffee. Three weeks later UC back. Didn’t know caffeine helped to keep UC in remission. Unable to get back in remission. November 2007 in surgery for colectomy/ileostomy. catheterization found 2300 cc of urine in bladder. (paunch). Large prostate, must use catheter every day to pee. Home in 4 days, 3 days later developed peritonitis. Live in small town. Hospital flies me by helicopter to Detroit hospital. Major surgery. Critical care for a week. Back home. Noticed right leg and arm not quite right. Must be small stroke. September 2009 diagnosed with Parkinsons. November 2009 prostate surgery. No more catheters. This whole thing because of enlarged prostate. Still married….

Only my mother's parents came from Poland.  Dad's parents were WASP's, ancestors came from England in 1660 and settled in NJ.
The section of Camden, NJ where my husband and I grew up was once mostly all Polish.  However, dad was born in the house I grew up in.  Very sad, isn't it, when you have to sell the house where you grew up?  I thought my dad would have a break down when he moved from Camden but the area was really going downhill.  The Polish church, St. Joe's, is still there but you couldn't pay me to worship there.  Very high crime rate.

Christine,
I do not have an ostomy (although my mom use to and I took care of her), but I do have ulcerative colitis so I lurk on the ostomy board in case I decide that would be the future for me. Anyhow, my mom was Polish and my dad was Slovak. Growing up on stuffed cabbage, stuffed peppers and "crushki" during the holidays was the norm for me. Girl, I am sooooo sorry you don't have the Polish Deli's by you that sell the pieorgi. I do and you can't even compare them to Mrs. T's. I don't live far from Whiting, Indiana and they have a pierogi festival there every summer. I remember my mom use to take baby cucumbers and put them in a crock on the back porch and turn them into polish dill pickles. They were good too! Ah, to be able to be a child again and eat whatever without any stomach issues. What's that song by Cher ... "If I could turn back time..."

Here in small town Gladwin, MI we don't even have a meat market let alone a Polish one. My mom made all the Polish food.

If you grew up in NJ and are old enough you grew up with DOO-WOP music. We didn't have much DOO-WOP, mostly Motown. Do you know who TJ Lubinsky is?

What are you taking for the UC?
