Hi Allll,

I haven't been on here in a while.  Hope you all are doing well.  I have had a pretty good summer except for a few ER visits due to my dehyration.  Doctors told me not to drink to much Gatorade because it spikes the triglycerides and not to drink regular water because there are no benefits for someone with a very active ileostomy and a lot of output.  They recommended I stick to smar***er because of the electrolytes.  I still end up in the ER.  Last night I went in and they told me my results were worse than the last time I went in.  My magnesium is low so they gave me IV magnesium and my kidney was sluggish and could eventually lead to kidney failure due to dehydration.  I take two lomotil before each meal, total of 6 sometimes 8 a day and still going to the bathroom A LOT!!  I drink A LOT of water that keeps in the bathroom as well.  I just don't know what to do to help my kidney go back to normal and slow down my system.  I feel like nothing is working and the doctors are not advising of anything else for me to do or try to slow things down.   Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

RITAS~are you using any bulking supplements like Metamucil? I know when I had very high output post surgery I had to use a combination of bulking supplements and Imodium to get things under control.

Have you talked to your surgeon? ER docs are not the best to ask about that problem since they usually treat the symptom, not the cause:(

Have you talked with your GI about taking codeine or tincture of opium to slow things down? Honestly, I think if they could get your gut to slow down you might retain fluids better. Are you drinking salty things like bouillon and V-8? Salt will also help you to retain fluids. Check out vitalyte at www.vitalyte.com It's an electrolyte beverage that is low in sugar and high in potassium. Much better than Gatorade and can be used along with your water.

Ritas,

Bananas, applesauce, rice, dry toast, potato, winter squash, all thickeners. Have you tried these? Rosemary
