I am a new ostomate and have read that alot of folks are using tube tops to support their pouches.  How tight is too tight?  Should the top be kind of loose to allow for expansion?

i use a belly band from motherhood maternity, and its not very tight, just holds it against me. It can be tight, that wont hurt anything, but you will have to empty a lot more often.
I only wear the belt when i wear certain clothes though.

Welcome, jigglypuff,

I'm all about simplicity and just tuck my pouch into my undies. :-)

I wear boy short's undies, and the whole shebang fits inside. I only wear a belt for a few hours after a change.

NASCaRon:
I was going to ask my mom to stitch something like that for me :)
I bought the wraps from Ostomy Secrets but paying $30 + $6 shipping for a wrap is a bit outlandish :( I'm sure a lot of time and effort went into the design/marketing/production but that's a lot of money!!!
I was going to pull the trigger and purchase another one from them but I like your idea better :) I'll head over to the fabric store and see if I can find some army swag fabric!!!

Do you have a pocket inside for the pouch?
