By skin breakdown, do you mean redness and itchiness?

My skin is bright red and almost like a rash in places and some opened skin like a sore.

first thing is you should to talk to your ostomy nurse about it. They may want to see it. some skin breakdowns are serious and need antibiotics to clear them up. If its just ulcerations you can try duoderm (from convatec) to help protect the skin as well as powders and such. It really depends on what the diagnosis is. I've taken the advice of polishdan from here and used Friar's balsam oil on my skin irritations. (which was a sore reddish spot, cleared up in just a week) definitely talk to your nurse though since its better to be safe than sorry. Hope you are able to get it cleared up quick!

-emergency transverse colostomy on 9/13/10 from perforated colon
-Now IBD is indeterminate tests will be done after healing if still UC J-pouch surgery, if Chron's take down of colostomy

I ditto to run it by your WOC Nurse...but in the interim Calmoseptine lotion could help protect the skin, too.

Is it just around the stoma or does it spread out?

It spreads out and under the adhesive. I called Cleveland Clinic and they said to use lotramine antifungal spray. Have any of you tried that?
