I have a bowel to bladder fistula caused by my last severe bout of diverticulitis, and so am due to have colostomy, but as I have a bad heart and am on clopidogerel (blood thinner), have been told that I might not survive! Cardiologist won't let them stop the clopidogerel in case I have heart attack, but surgeons say that I might bleed to death. I am also epileptic, asthmatic and borderline diabetic. How can one person be so lucky!!  Has anyone had surgery whilst on blood thinners?

I also had severe diverticulitis, had total colectomy this past July. Post surgery, had major complications due to the anastomosis. It separated and for days had leakage before I went in for surgery. At that time, was septic and had a blood clot. Was given, per the hemotoligist, Lovenox (stronger than heparin). On the 6th day, my abdominal wound bled and wouldn't stop. Another surgery to remove staples, have the wound monitored & heal on it's own (3months.) When the bleeding occurred, I was immediately switched to heparin, but the damage was already done. My surgeon stated that in 25 years of surgery, myself and another patient of his bleed out abdominally because of Lovenox. There has to be something that they can do...you can not go into surgery with the response that you've received. Best of luck!!!

Thanks for reply, but seemingly there is only two options, one is living as I am with the fistula and it's consequences, or to have the operation. At the moment I have just gone down with bronchitis so surgery will be deferred anyway, so I am thinking of perhaps leaving things to see how they progress. Fate has taken a hand so who knows what will happen next!!!! Thanks anyway, and I am still upbeat, I am the eternal optimist so what will be, will be.

Had just decided to defer operation (in my mind), when all the abdo pain flared up again so spoke to GP and Stoma Nurse and have decided to go ahead. Then found out that op was deferred from 10th to 31st Jan because of theatre cleaning, so as I am in pain again and very little food, then I think I will be glad to get it over with.
