Hi Everyone,

so for the past couple of weeks I've been feeling very tired. At first I thought I was not drinking enough fluids but that was not the case. My electrolyte levels were normal.
Then my PCP ran a laundry list of bloodwork on me and found my Ferritin level (iron stores) to be very low, 10. I think the normal range is between 20 - 345.
I'm going to see a hematologist today because my PCP recommended I get a few doses of IV Iron infusions. The iron pills I am taking seem to be helping a little bit but he wants to jumpstart the process.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Which Iron pills do you take? The ones I take seem to come out in my ostomy sometimes.

I had pretty bad anemia after I went through my temp ileostomy. My surgeon suggested crushing up the multi-vitamin I took (which had 100% of the daily value for iron in it) and putting into oatmeal or cream of wheat, which I did. That at least meant that the tablet didn't just come out in the wash, so to speak.

So I saw the hematologist and she recommended I do 2 doses of Infed and them monitor. Said it could possibly be from being in the hospital and surgeries and having UC over time .... lets see how it goes. Will keep everyone posted.

My son was very anemic (hemoglobin of 62 and iron stores of ZERO) and had weekly venafer infusions (which I guess is the same idea as Infed). They should help you a lot as long as you are not bleeding.
Mom to Dillon (age 19) who had three major UC flares over two years....Very sick. Colectomy Sept/09, J pouch built Jan/10 and take down Feb/10. Now out living life at University and doing great. NO MEDS
