Hi, my name is Phil and in 1996 I had a total colectomy due to UC. I chose a procedure called the BCIR. It is similar to the J-pouch procedure but differnt in many ways. Yes, there is an internal pouch. But to empty it you use a catheter. The exit point is just above the pubic hairline and looks a lot like a second belly button. The rectum is closed up as there is no more use for it. Why did I chose this procedure. Well as a airline pilot going six times a day isn't really an option for me. I usually only go 2 to 3 times a day. Also due to the nature of the pouch incontinence is a total impossibility. I'm an incredibly active person sports and travel are a huge part of my life. This type of procedure allows me to be as active as I can be. Also, It is rare that I have to get up in the middle of the night to go to the rest room. I can eat anything I want although some foods tend to ive me problems. It is nice not having a bag and nicer still not having to go to the bathroom all day. All I'm saying is that there is an alternative to the two standard reccomended procedures out there. This isn't a new latest craze procedure and has been around for a long time. If you have questions drop me an email at jetpilot7371@comcast.net
