Im a new ostomate, having had proctocolectomy surgery 4.5 weeks ago. Ive been using the Hollister 2 piece, which Im happy with. I also have some 1 and 2pc samples with filter that Id like to try. Does the filter need to be opened or uncovered, or does it work as is? The instructions dont address the filter at all.

Im having trouble with the stoma paste coming off, so Im going to try an Adapt barrier ring this time and see how that goes. Thanks!

It supposed to "just work". I thought it was weird to because it looks like a plastic thing, put apparently it is breathable.
However, it doesn't work as much as you think. The filter works over time so if you have a lot of gas then it is going to seem like it isn't working.

And the paste, i hate it. I started using Eakin rings and I have never looked back. I do have some Adapt rings, but I never got around to trying them.
I use about 1/4 of the ring and apply it on the wafer around the hole that I cut out.

Thanks for your response, NewShinyCD. Im trying the Hollister 1 piece pouch with filter, with an Adapt ring, and a little stoma powder for skin irritation. I cut a 2 inch Adapt ring in half and reformed it. A big change from a 2 piece pouch with stoma paste, but it will give me a chance to see what products work best for me.

What I dont like about this 1 piece pouch is the lock and roll closure doesnt have an extra flap, which makes it seem like my clothes could catch on it and accidentally open it.

I had problems with Hollister bags.  Twice they broke on me.  I use Coloplast one piece with filter and that is it...just the one piece bag, no wafer and it is great!  However, the filter gets full of poo within hours.  They have yet to perfect them.  To get rid of odor, I took advice from the forum and now use about two caps of 3% hydrogen peroxide mixed with warm water in one of those little bathroom cups to rinse out my bag when emptying.  Then, I use the Reliamed deodorizer drops.  Also, to have a minty fresh smell....eat wintergreen mints..mmmm..how fragrant tongue .

You said "just the one piece bag, no wafer". Did you mean no extra seal? When the filter plugs up, what do you do about gas in the bag?

Dan, you are correct, no seal.  I haven't had any problems with extra gas in the bag.  Guess I'm not too gassy..lol.
