Do you have UC, CD, or something else?
Do you still have your rectum?

I can explain it if I know what you are dealing with. The jpouch doesn't work for all cases.

So, with your history, do you have Crohn's? If you have been diagnosed with Crohn's you cannot have the jpouch surgery.

In a nutshell, the jpouch surgery consists of removing the entire colon and rectum. about 2cms of rectal tissue is left for continence. about 1ft. of the small intestine is pulled down and positioned in the shape of a j. The jpouch functions as a false rectum.

The surgery is usually performed on those with ulcerative colitis since that disease is limited to the colon and rectum. It's also done on patients with Familial Polyposis and to a lesser extent diverticulitis and colon cancer patients.

The function, after recovery, is similar to a person with a colon and rectum but our frequency is higher since we have less space for the storage of waste.

There is no bag. Defecation occurs like it does normally, out the anus.
