Can anyone who has had this surgery give us an idea of approx. how long it'll take before he can sit without it being agony?

I could sit right away without any agony.  I had my rectum removed but the anus was not sewn closed.  Heard different ways of thinking on this subject but my surgeon's opinion is to not sew it closed.

I had mine sewn closed. it was probably 2 weeks before I could sit COMFORTABLY. Before that I just sat on one cheek. :)

I had mine sewed shut with my initial surgery. It hurt, but not severely. I had no trouble sitting on it right away... even when the staples were in. The pain, though mild for me, has taken a while to go away. Even at three months it is still a little tender, but my surgeon said everything looks great and that it is nothing to worry about. Just takes a while to heal... the stitches he used deep within the muscle layer down there also take 6 months to fully dissolve.
-Officially diagnosed with UC in 2006, though had symptoms since 1999.
-Had mild/moderate symptoms continuously until severe flare in autumn 2010 which required 2-week hospital stay
-Took Asacol, Rowasa, Canasa and Prednisone to manage flares but meds stopped working
-Tried 1 infusion of Remicade but had excruciating joint pain and discontinued
-Had permanent ileostomy surgery 11/8/2010

For me, I didn't have much pain there, the incision on my stomach was worse.

Do pain meds help?

My instructions were to sit from one side to the other...and NOT sit directly on my bottom to help with healing and blood flow.

Thank you all for the advice and info! He is doing remarkably well just 6 days post-op! He came home monday (1 day early!) and sitting is getting less painful  everyday. The pain meds do help and he's going longer between needing to take them! We are all so amazed at how well he's doing and wish now he hadn't put it off for so long.

So glad to hear he is doing so well. I sat on a pillow when sitting up and laid in a recliner quite a bit during the healing process. Each day will be better and better!
