How can you tell what the irritation is?

So i started getting a bunch of leaks, one right after the other at the beginning of February. I have no idea why either. I didn't change anything about my system; been doing the same thing for 4 months but then leaky leaky leaky. I did lose a little weight, but it only made the fold in my skin less deep so i don't know what gives. Maybe I got a bad batch of eakins or something. whatever. Anyway... So my skin got a small amount of irritation where the leak was happening so I figured it was due to the stool getting and sitting on it (leaks always happened overnight) But, the last time I changed with NO leaks the irritation has spread and gotten worse. It now covers the entire bottom half of my wafer area where it started in a small 1/2 inch circle. It's really itchy, but is on and off. Could the irritation be an infection of some kind? It is red and a few spots are a little scaly, like dry skin, so i don't know if maybe now I'm allergic to my wafer or if I got a yeast infection or what because I don't know the difference between the kinds of rashes. Any ideas or should I just go see my ostomy nurse?

I had same problem few months after my first stoma was done, 19 years ago. Suddenly bags not sticking properly, leaking and skin getting very irritated. Ended up going to see stoma nurse and changed bag types, seemed I had suddenly become allergic to the one I was using. So would suggest chat with ostomy nurse and try a different appliance if necessary.

I'd say definitely see your nurse. It could be a yeast infection from having wetness under there, or it could be any number of other things...but regardless of what it is, the sooner you treat it, the better!

I agree with 80sChick and stripey you should see your wound care nurse. That could be a few different things. I myself had a problem not to different fro what you are describing and it just turned out to be skin irritation. I got some powder and barrier prep and the problem has seem to go away.

ah okey dokey, I shall give them a call tomorrow. I really hope it's not an allergy because i'm allergic to convatec and I don't like the rings on most other bags. I love my coloplast sensura and don't want to give them up. I'm hoping for an infection odd as that sounds. thanks for the fast replies!!
