Hello! I am just going to use this thread to organize my tests results.
Colonoscopy in March 2006:
4mm Polyp removed, mild Melanosis and a long redundant Colon.

Sitzmarker in April 2011:
I got the results of my sitzmarker. I took one capsule days 1-3. On day 4 and 7 I had x rays. My results are confusing. On day 4, every single one of the markers were in the right colon, mostly near the bottom. On day 7, 12 were in the right colon, 1 in the transverse, 11 in the left colon and 37 in the distal sigmoid and rectum. I was diagnosed with Colonic Inertia. I was then told I would have a Defocography done and was scheduled for an appointment with a Colorectal Surgeon.

Defecography in April 2011:
The Defecography was rough. The prep didn't work (surprise surprise). When I arrived, I had to drink two 12oz bottles of Barium mad . I managed to get it down. I did the test and the radiologist explained that I had a small Rectocele and moderate sized Enterocele but that he did not believe that it was effecting my constipation. He said my motility appeared to be the large issue. Other than that, he didn't not see Anismus or any other pelvic floor dysfunction. YIPPEE! Two tests down!

Appointment with Colorectal Surgeon:April 28th-he wants to do more testing to see if Surgery will even help.

Anorectal Manometry:5/11- Normal but a little bit on the high side for my relaxing pressure. My squeeze pressure is the strongest he has ever seen!
Pudendal Nerve Study: 5/11-Normal but again barely normal
Gastric Empting Test:5/11-At 4 hours 20% was left:(, was diagnosed with mild Gastroparesis which Sugeon said should not effect results of surgery.
Small Bowel Study:5/19- Upper GI went well, SBFT was done within 30 minutes.

COLECTOMY ON JUNE 29TH @1P.M.

I'm not sure Tickled.  When I had a study done, it was different.  I swallowed one capsule, and had 3 pics taken.  After a week, I still had plenty on my ascending and the beginning of my transverse.  The last little bit, not too many, got stuck in my kink at my splenic flexure, so it really makes me wonder why the doctors thought that removing my kink would help, when obviously it was moving slow.  So, now I am gaining more knowledge through this site, and having an appt. with an actual colo-rectal surgeon on Monday April 11th.  Getting scared b/c it is someone new! shocked    I am sure once I get this stricture fixed, or whatever happens. I will have another one.  Hopefully, you will get some answers soon!  However, I think that moves plenty slow if you still had markers on that right side on day 4!  My mom said even after a few days you should have the urge to go.

Thank you for your response. Good luck to you. I am so frusturated. The one thing I didn't want to happen did and that is the whole pelvic floor issue. I have never heard a good thing about biofeedback. It will just be longer I will have to wait to get relief. I just can not do this anymore.

I agree Tinkled.  I am getting to that point where I am getting soo weak and tired that I do not know if I can do this anymore either!  Constipation has sure taken over my life, the trapped gas is the worst!!  From the posts I have read on here, biofeedback does sound like a lot of work.  The more I research, I should have had a defecography and other tests before my kink was removed.  I never did, and I know my stool moves very, very slowly because I can't even get it down the bottom where it should be!  I think the spots where my stool doesn't reach yet, like my left side I complain about, you hear my trapped air b/c it never moves out (gurgle, gurgle), and then about everytime I eat I put more pressure there b/c a lot of the time I mean I feel better when my laxative works, but then I don't feel better, did its job, and now the nerves are dead again!  Still don't think doctors understand my complaint here.  But, hopefully this colo-rectal surgeon will be nice!  I hope, I hope!

Tickle,

1. even tho you felt your bowels were not acting as usual during this test, this is still def CI. the perfect sign for CI is that the markers are all spread throughout the colon, just like your x ray shows. and also if more than 80% of the markers are still left in the colon after 5 days, it's CI.

2. it doesn't necessarily mean your transverse colon is working right, cuz on another test the results can be different. but even if it was, it doesn't matter, cuz with CI it's best to remove the whole colon. those who had only part of it removed eventually had to go back to remove the rest of it.

3. about the pelvic floor, you'll have to do the proper tests - anal manometry and defecography. the sitz marker test can't tell us a whole lot about the pelvic. no point in guessing, when you have the results of the pelvic tests we'll be able to know better.

in any case, you should make sure you tell the dr your bowels were not acting as they usually do and that usually things are slower. maybe it was b/c of the laxatives you took prior to the test.

good luck and let us know how it goes.

hurtboy, you're so right. your sitz test obviouly shows your whole colon is slow. your drs are not right and only taking care of the kink will not help you anything. it will only make the process longer for you with bigger number of surgeries instead of solving this with one surgery once and for all. hope the new surgeon helps you.

I spoke to my GI he said that my colon was slow which we already knew. He said I could try 12mcg of Amitiza since 24 was too much but I opted to pass. He then told me next I would be doing the anal manometry and the defecography. The defecography is scheduled for Monday. Did anyone else have a prep before the test? Then on the 28th I meet with a colorectal surgeon, I guess he is the only one that can do the manometry? Afterwards we we will schedule the manometry. But that is where I stand. In his 9 years being a physician he has only sent one patient to have a colon resectioning so that worries me but I guess I will just wait for the results of the next two tests.

I wish you the best of luck Tickled! My goodness, more amitiza; I hate that stuff!! Don't blame you for saying refer to the surgeon. I had my appt. yesterday with the colo-rectal surgeon. He was very nice, great bedside manner, and he did not understand the rationale for the local docs down here for only removing a part of my colon. He even said that my sigmoid colon was extra long, redundant, and floppy. Makes me wonder if I was born with a non-functioning, extra-long colon. I am going to be undergoing sitzmaker test again, which I know will make me very cranky!!! Took a laxative tonight, and then after that I have to stop, take the pill on Sunday, then go for pics on Monday, Wednesday, Friday next week! Going to a long week and half!!! After that, plan for an upper gi and defecography. If only my colon is affected, then remove the rest of my colon. I am ready to feel better just like you!!!

Ugh another Sitzmarker? That is so stressful. I hope the results come back abnormal (of course so you can continue with surgery). Keep me updated and I will you.

Thank you Trixiemom!
Hurtboy- How is the sitzmarker going?
I am so glad the defecography is done! My appointment with the colorectal surgeon is next week. Here is my issue though. It seems as though my GI(who I really like) has kinda pushed me on the surgeon. He didn't even give me the results of the defecography (good thing I spoke directly to the radiologist) he just told me he sent the report to the surgeon. I don't understand why he isn't helping anymore? Do you think maybe he just believes there is nothing else he can do for me? I feel abandoned.lol

Yes, thanks trixiemom!
Tickled-the sitz marker is going. My tummy is really hurting; haven't went since last Wednesday now, still have one more x-ray. Monday, day 1 (swallowed the pill Sunday morning), I couldn't see the markers. This morning, I saw them, scattered all along my ascending colon. The tech said today "you are pretty full!" Yes, that is why I feel very bad. I was very nauseous last night. I imagine my study will come out like the one last year, but who knows? Markers move a little bit more, and that is it; dont' even reach the bottom.

Also, I started to feel like that with my local GI doc here, like they leave out something about me. He can't do anymore to help me. That is why I am glad I finally took the intiative to see a colo-rectal surgeon last week. Wish me luck! One more full day, take another picture Friday morning before work, and then I am free from this test!

I am so frusturated. I just feel like this will never be fixed. I doubt the surgeon can do anything for me. I just feel so hopeless. Maybe I should just live with it?

Hang in there Tinckled!  Just think you are meeting with a surgeon soon!  I had a rough week you know, since I had to repeat the transit study.

Day 1 (Monday)-markers just entered colon-swallowed pill Sunday morning
Day 3 (Wednesday)-markers from ascending colon to transverse
Day 5 (Friday)-hardly no movement, markers pretty stayed in same spot, all still in there

Was suprised on Thursday afternoon during test, had tiny movement, but just a bird dropping, nothing to be happy about; I just can't push out stool without a numerous laxatives!

Friday I got off of work early to start cleaning myself out after not going for a week and half.  Nothing Saturday morning, and felt like I wasn't going to do anything, so more laxatives and finally got movement yesterday afternoon.  Still feel like there some stool in there, but I got the impaction out for now.  I am ready to feel better, too!

However, my new surgeon is really taking care of me.  A couple hours after my last pic on Friday morning, the nurse called me, and I have my small bowel study on Thursday, 4/28 (same day as your appt) to make sure it is okay.  Then, she is working on getting my defecography and another appt. with him later.

I know more surgery is coming for me to remove the rest of my colon, but it is scary.  However, I am ready to eat proper, not have indigestion, nausous, and feel weak a lot.  Like I said hang in there, which I know is hard to do, I feel the same way, and I really hope this surgeon you meet with is wonderful!

I am having a small bowel study.  I am not looking forward to drinking all this barium though.  As for my doctor, I was just seeing a local surgeon and gi doctor here till they made me mad, and never seemed to contact me.  So, I took matters into my own hands.  My mom told me how she liked the Springfield Clinic here in IL.  She was referred to see a doctor there.  I did some research about the doctors there and found they had 5 colo-rectal surgeons, so I made a call.  The nurse I talked to said I didn't need a referral, since I already had soo many tests, and part of my colon removed with the screwy doctors down here thinking that would help.  Turns out, this colo-rectal surgeon was very nice.  I hope they call me back Thursday afternoon or Friday after my small bowel just as quick as they did my sitzmarker.  I am traveling a bit b/c Springfield is about 3-3.5 hours for me, since I live in southern IL now.  (I was able to have the sitz marker and small bowel now tomorrow down here, but I have to go up there for the defecography, and if surgery comes.  If everything comes back besides my colon showing not working, he will prob. take out the rest of the colon-he said it was really the only cure for CI.)  However, I have two best friends that live there, and some family that doesn't live to far away, so it works out.  Good luck at your appt. tomorrow!!!

Oh, and I saw your post about your sitzmarker.  Like Hoodya said, I wouldn't be suprised if your colon has become loopy or long.  From my previous surgery, kink at splenic flexure, then the surgeon told in Springfield I had a redundant, long sigmoid colon.  Finally, for this last transit study, the reports said I had a redundant cecum, which explains why I get gas pains there a lot, too.  All these years of constipation I have suffered with all my life has finally taken a toll on me!

You are definitely making progress! The barium is horrible, I know I had to drink 24oz. I am kinda bummed. I was doing some research on the surgeon I am meeting with tomorrow. She said he didn't let her ask question and flat out refused to do surgery. I am thinking this is going to a big waste of time. I am pretty upset right now.

My surgeon appointment is not until 3 but I am so angry. I got the report from my Colonocopy 6 YEARS AGO. At this time, my constipation was mild. However, at that time on top of the polyp that was removed apparently I have a long redundant colon and mild Melanosis. What was mild sure isn't now:/

Back from the appointment. He was a lot nicer than that lady made him out to be. He spent a lot of time with me and he cracked up at my clever sarcastic remarks.lol He said that he wants me to do an Anorectal Manometry. I also have to go for a Gastric Emptying test and Small Bowel study. If those are all normal then we will continue on with surgery. However, if something is abnormal I will have to try something else first. If my Manometry comes back abnormal, I will have to have the Botox injection and will have to go through biofeedback:( I don't know what the treatment for the other issues would be. He said I was the most knowledgable patient he has had. As far as my weird sitzmarker results. He stated that I have an extremely long and loopy redundant colon. He said what I have been waiting to hear for years " YOU DO NOT HAVE IBS'!!! So on May 11th I have the GE Test and the Anorectal Manometry.

Hi Tickled,

Glad your appt. with the surgeon went well!  I know you were worried.  Yes, it is sounding like that is a common thread with everybody with CI; long, redundant colons.  Like I said, found out from the surgeon I have a redundant sigmoid colon.  Then, from the report last week on my sitz marker, I have developed a redundant cecum.  And yes, it does feel good to know it is not IBS b/c that is what I thought for years, too.  Like I told the surgeon, I never knew what my problem was b/c I would be sooo good following an IBS diet, and try to incorporate fiber, etc.; but, I never felt better.  Nothing worked!

As for my small bowel yesterday, I think it went okay.  I still feel weird seeing other people about my condition b/c I saw the same tech that did a procedure on me before, plus the same radiologist.  A lot of people just do not understand colon inertia.  I just feel they have that aggragate attuitude about them; oh, it's just constipation!  Get over it!  Anyways, yes, it was a lot of barium to drink.  Didn't feel that good last night; haven't really went all week; can't wait till today is over, and hopefully, if I take a dulcolax cocktail tonight, I get stool and barium out of my system.

I haven't heard from the doctor or anything, but I assume my small bowel is fine b/c it was a couple hours.  Just waiting for the next test, defecography, and another appt. with the doc.

I cringe when I hear "IBS" or "Miralax". I am so just so done hearing these two words!lol I too had the same issue, he said that because it was so long that nothing was where it was supposed to be. My Cecum starts way down in the bottom middle, right by my rectum. I am nervous about the Manometry because I just don't want to waste my time or money on Biofeedback! I guess time will tell, I am just happy that he is open to speaking with me about surgery. It doesn't hurt that he good friends with my GI.lol I was suprised he is in young, in his early 40's but he is one of the best around so I will trust him.

I know what you mean about people just writing everything off as regular consiptation! People just need to keep their mouths shut about topics they know nothing about! Well, I am glad it is over for you. Wasn't it a long test? It takes time for it to even get to the small intestine so how long were you there for? Do you think you have any sort of PFD?

Hi Tickled,

I did hear from the doctor's office today, and I got the report on my test yesterday.  I was right, the esophagus, stomach, and small bowels is okay.  It took 2 hours for the barium to reach the beginning of my colon.  So, yes, I was there most the morning, but I knew I would be.  I am glad that my small bowels is okay.  I had a feeling it was.  Only finding was that I from all the pictures yesterday was that I was constipated.

My next test is scheduled for May 11th, defecography.  The nurse said she would have scheduled it next week, but she is trying to save trips to Springfield for me because I need to follow-up with the doctor after all these tests.  After that test, I wake up bright and early the next day, the 12th, to see the doc at 8:15.

For your question about my PFD.  I really do not know what to expect with this test, and I am nervous.  My colon moves sooo slow that it does take forever to reach my rectum.  Also, I have sooo much problems passing gas.  Even when I get cleaned out, my left side is very distended, and you can hear air trapped in there not expelling out, and I have problems passing it.  I try to massage that area then a lot or relax it with a heating pad to force it out.  That is why I feel sooooo bad all the time.  It is like I feel pressure there and the bottom all the time gettin stuck.  It is hard to say whether it is just my colon or a combination of both, colon and rectum.

Like I said, I hope it is just my colon, so then can move on with my life.  I have told people, just think, if I was still messing with these doctors down here in southern IL, I would still be in the same spot.  I wouldn't have made all this progress soo far.  Only a partial removal of the colon does not cure colon inertia!
