Surgery is next Wednesday and today I am going to get all of the items for my prep and my liquid diet. I noticed on my sheet that the part that said no red dye was marked out and just left liquid diet. I understand why you can't have it for Colonoscopy but wanted to see if anyone else was given the ok to eat red Jello or drink red Gatorade?

Ahh Mary Wednesday will be here before you know it, I'm excited for you! What do you have to do for your prep, and when do you have to start it?

Thank you, I hope things get moving for you too!! I have to take Moviprep, the one prep I have yet to try. I am going on a liquid diet on Sunday and Monday and then clear liquid diet on Tuesday. They told me I only had to do a one day prep, yea I know that won't work.lol So I am taking my normal laxatives Monday and Tuesday because as the past would show the prep is not enough to work. The issue is other than soup what else can I eat.? I will not eat popsicles or jello or drink Gatorade unless it is red. So, if I can't I guess I am out of luck. The nurse said I could have red but I don't want anything to jeopardize this surgery.

Mary- when I had my colonoscopy last year, one of the preps I used was moviprep. Of all of the preps I had to drink (I had to take like 4 different things over the course of 2 days)...Movieprep was the best. I ate light/liquid things like soups for a few days before, and then I took my normal laxatives the day before I started the preps, which DEFINITELY is a good idea. The Moviprep will go through much easier if it doesn't have to work through a lot of stuff. I am sure you already know that. But my suggestion is: I'm not sure what "flavor" you'll get, but my moviprep was lemon flavored and it tasted awful. I'd recommend getting some crystal lite packs or something to mix in. It will be easier to drink if you mix it up a little ahead of time and stick it in the fridge so it is ice cold. I also bought some strongly flavored hard candies to pop in my mouth right after drinking the stuff which really helped get the taste out of my mouth fast.

As far as red foods, as far as I know the only reason you can't eat or drink them before a colonoscopy is because red food dyes stain very easily, and they can't tell on the scope if what they are seeing is just red residue from what you've been eating or drinking, or something else like blood or inflammation. I am sure it wouldn't matter one bit for your surgery since they aren't inspecting your colon or anything, they are just taking it out.

But you just do what makes you feel better mentally, if that means no red stuff, then don't bother. You can eat all the red jello and popsicles you want after the surgery anyway :)
