At least I seem to be freaking out about it much less. Last night I was over at a friend's for dinner. there were three of us. I had decided that morning that I would try using a flat bag after many weeks of using a convex-light bag. The day went well. Then probably around 10 pm, sitting around drinking wine after dessert, I thought I was getting a brief wiff of something so I went off to the bathroom to check. Sure enough, stool was leaking under the seal. I had everything with me and got it off and put on a fresh bag. Then I woke up around dawn with another leak. It's good that I noticed it even in my sleep, but it's very disturbing that it happens twice in a row on the weekend, because I worry that it's going to continue happening during the week at work, which for me amounts to a complete catastrophe.
After some thought, I came to the idea that it happened the second time because when I was changing bags the first time, I didn't use derma sol to get the sticky stuff from the seal and from the Eaken off my skin.
Sound plausible?
Although what I notice by every leak is that the stool comes out and stays on the top of the stoma and doesn#t fall into the bag, and so when more stool comes out, it has no where to go and so fluid leaks under the seal, destroys it, and creates a way out for the stool. I had eaten tons of pureed raspberries that day. Could that be it? The bag of potato chips?
I am trying to figureout ways to eat fruits and vegetables by using a a little puree machine, and then drinking fruit-buttermilk shakes. the vegetables have to be steamed very well, bcause I am also having a jaw problem and for the time being cannot chew very well.
Am also wondering about the size of the hold I am cutting in the one-piece - should it be tight? Did I cut it too small? I also had a bad experience with cutting it too big..
Eager to hear thoughts from others.....

Did you have leaks with the convex? What is derma-sol? Is your stoma retracted or does it stick out?

B'Dereh:

Please answer Dan's two questions..

then, please consider:

As far as size, the wafer should not be cut so it is right on the stoma...not good! My WOCN nurse said there should be a "halo" of skin around the stoma so it has room to move, and the wafer has room to bend when YOU move....the halo is to be filled in with paste and/or EAKIN seal. If you are using a moldable, then this doesn't apply (that is, there will be no "halo").

If your stoma is sticking out a lot, maybe you should consider a two piece...it may show more, but it does give your stoma a little more room in the bag.

Food can definitely affect the consistency, so what ever you ate that day could have caused the "pancaking" effect that led to the leak. When you eat such foods, are you also drinking a lot of water? I know some ostomy publications talk about not drinking a lot of water right with your meals and to wait a bit, but my nurse said the opposite thing. She said to drink plenty right with my meals. I do this and it seems to keep my output more of an applesauce consistency so it doesn't pancake. When I get the really thick output, it is a sign that I haven't had enough water. Some fruit juices can also loosen things up a bit. It is all a big experiment to see what works, not only with the appliances, but with diet.

Other than that... from my experience, ditto what Enigmawrap wrote.

When preparing to apply your stoma device think of it as an email address.  Its gotta be just right.

When Polishdan gets around to sharing his routine I'm sure your leaking problems will be over.

Me?
I take the old wafer off and clean with only water and 1/4 of paper towels. Dry with a hair dryer. Shave as necessary with moustache trimmer. Wipe with wet paper towel. Dry again. Apply Friars Balsam Compound on the whole wafer area and stoma. Dry again. Apply Convatec Convex wafer. Done. No soap. No adhesive removers. No skin prep pads. Friars stops open skin and heals if necessary. I go 7 or 8 days between wafer changes.

You did not answer......how long is your stoma? Does it hang down? If so you will never get a good seal. It is called prolapsed. After my colectomy my stoma was prolapsed. Went for surgery to fix it. Then it was retracted. Went again to fix it. Retracted again. Convex wafer fixed it.

I apologize to you all, I was working so much that I haven't been on the site since the night I wrote.

Dan, yes, the leaks have happened while I was using a convex. Dermasol is the cleaning product from coloplast, which is for wiping off sticky left-over stuff from the last bag that's on your skin.

My stoma does not hang down nor is it refracted. It is about 1 and ¾ centimeters out at the most and sometimes only one centimeter out or even a bit less.

Strangely I am developing affectionate feelings for it, but it knows we are only going to be together until it gets a new job as my jpouch. I think that's how it works.

I am looking forward to hearing Ron's answer.

Enigma, I am going to try what you said, cutting a bit bigger and letting the Eaken fill in the extra space.

I'll be on again in an hour and then probably not until Thursday night.
