Hello all,
Nearly three months after collectomy, and waiting for operation number two in the winter, I was having some strange sensations around my stoma last week and on thursday evening took myself to the first aid in the surgery where I'd had the collectomy. The attending doctor was great and after examining me, said I have a tiny hernia and my stool is way to thick. The most important thing, he said, is that I have to keep the stool as fluid as possible, drink more water, and he recommended I take lactuose twice a day. I've been taking it and it makes the stool totally liquid, which makes life easier in the sense that emptying is very quick business now.
That I'm getting such a thick consistency without lactuose will probably be an advantage for life with the j-pouch in a few months. But I'm worried about the hernia. He said it might get worse, or it might not get worse, before the next surgery, but there's nothing I can do for it but drink lots.
Any experience here?

I don't know much about hernias (fortunately), but a lot of people wear belts to prevent them or prevent them from getting worse. I know that nu-hope is one of the manufacturers of the belts.

Hopefully thinning your output will help w/the accidents you were having.

Lactulose is available in the States with a perscription. It definitely works!

hernia update: A few days later, my GI sent me acros the way (big hospital complex) so that the surgeon could look at my stoma. I havea great surgeon, he examined me and said it is avery, very tiny hernia and that as long as I can cough etc. with nothing popping out, I'm fine. He said the hernia will be operate away when I get the jpouch andreminded me to make a date withhim for the 2nd surgery. I keep having crushes on these doctors but I guess that's sort of normal.
Anyway, I haven't had any leakages, so am feeling much more confident and nornal throughout the day.

I had my surgery in April.  A temporary ileostomy.  I currently have a hernia about the size of an orange.  Although I am concerned, my surgeon says that he will fix it on the reversal???

Hi tiaeight,
I'm sorry it's so big. Mine is tiny, otherwise I'd be much more upset. That's the same thing my surgeon said, that as long as it doesn't get worse, the hernia is fixed by the reversal. I'm going to ask if I should get some kind of girdle or at least something to wear around my waist so that don't feel so vulnerable.
