Hi guys. I am 10days out from a Colectomy. Everything was awesome at first but the I have had issues the past two days. I feel the urge to have a BM and I can usually get some mush out but that is it. It almost feels the same as when I had an impaction prior to surgery. I feel the pressure but nothing comes out. My Rectum is just burning. I have always been able to push out the stool and it is barely has any form. Was liquid up until yesterday. My Anorectal Manometry was normal prior to surgery and the Defecography was normal other than the fact that I had a small Rectocele and Moderate Sized Enterocele. Well the issue was my Defecography was in April and in April and May I had two really bad painful impactions. I am wondering if I have made either the Rectocele or Enterocele worse? I don't know what it is going on. This came out of nowhere. Has anyone had this surgery and also had to have the pelvic floor repaired?

Hi Mary,
Are you having any other issues, like bloating/distension or nausea or anything like that? You are only 10 days out, so I wonder if your body is just feeling irritated right now. Perhaps you have some swelling or something, making it more difficult to go to the bathroom at the moment. Sort of like when your eyes get irritated and they get puffy? It won't hurt to call your doctor, but try not to worry in the meantime too much, you are so soon out of a very major surgery and your body will definitely have its ups and downs for a few weeks. Hopefully this latest bump in the road will resolve itself soon enough, like your last one did.

i know it is easier to give this advice than it is to take it, because only YOU know how you really feel. But I do hope you feel better soon! Maybe a warm shower will help, or just take a day and lounge around and watch movies for the day, and get up every now and then to walk some. Don't forget that while walking is important, it's also important to let yourself just be a bum and relax some of the time too! You definitely deserve it :)

Please keep us posted!!

don't stress too soon. it takes time for your system to adjust. be patient and stick to the low residue for the next 3 mons (at least). i hope it's just part of the process and things will improve. give your body time to heal. let us know how you're doing. love and hugs!

Hey Mary,
Sorry you are feeling bad! How many times per day are you going?  Are you experiencing any trapped gas that you can't get out?  Any nausea/bloating/burpiness/vomiting?  Any rectal spasms?  Does it feel like a door you can't push open?  You can still get something out, but does it take a lot of time, pressure, working the stool out?  Sorry, full of questions, but I have been having a hard time!

As for me, I have been getting sick, nausea, and bloated as the day progresses.  The only reason I think I haven't vomited is I try really hard what I eat, trying to stick to a low-residue diet.  As for me, I have had a couple mornings, where I had success on getting something out, after working out if for awhile.  However, most the time, I have been doing enemas now every morning.  I hate them, and I haven't tried mom of yet, so I might try that this week.  However, for me, I know I am having problems.  I asked about the nausea and trapped gas b/c, if I am lucky, go in the morning (usually with assistance all the time now, or the enema is still working off and on in the morning), I get sick as the more food and liquid I put in my system as the day progresses.  Something is preventing me from having all these bowel movements I could be having throughout the day.  One wrong food, especially too many carbs, I start burping like crazy until I can get the gas out downwards.

Yesterday afternoon, I felt horrible; I was soooo bloated, and I just wanted to sit there.  I know I should walk, but that doesn't help me b/c I will burp insteads.  I really have to lie on the couch until it passes.  Yesterday about 2pm, I had a snack, then I just felt awful!  I took a nap, and it wasn't till about 4 or 4:30 till I started passing some gas.  It was like off and on; I have been getting the worse gas pains ever.  Also, I am getting these spasms down at my bottom.  Currently, the surgeon and nurse think in the office that I am having anal problems; I have never had the anal manometry test, scheduled for July 18th.  But they don't think it is right, that I keep on getting sick, and half the time need assistance to go to the bathroom, feeling bloated and nausea.  It is very frustrating!  It is like I don't have a free-flowing constant air coming out of my bottom, and I am just sooo ready to live a normal life.  I knew it would take some time to recooperate, but I didn't think I would be having this many problems sooo soon!

Let us know how you are doing, and hope things are getting a little better!  (((Hugs!)))

Thanks guys. Not sure what the deal is. What concerns me is I was normal at first. As far as symtpoms:
Bloating:Mild since surgery
Nausea or burping:no
Trapped Gas:A couple of days ago but it was in the upper abdomen
All I feel is pain and pressure and then my rectum starts to burn so bad.
Kyle-I sure hope you get some relief soon too. Am I better now,yes of course but still having a lot of issues. I know how frusturating it can be. Ali, I hope you are right that it is swelling. Right now it isn't bad enough I need to call the doctor but I have a follow up appointment in a week and a half.

Hi,

I am 2 months post op. I have a temp ilestomy bag (which I hate). I have Stage III rectal cancer and had surgery in May 2011 to remove whatever was left of my tumor after chemo and radiation. Not only were the remains of the tumor removed but I also had a unexpected hysterectomy. I'll be having a reversal in a few months and can't wait. I was reading your question and I am having some similar issues. I have so much rectal pressure and discomfort. I can't hardly sit for long periods of time, and when standing I feel like i need to have BM. My doctor says its normal and that I'm "still connected" so its stool making its way out. He recommended ibuprofen which doesn't help me at all. I dont know the answer to your question but i know the feeling. The only way I feel get some relief is by laying down and taking some pressure off my bottom. Also I found that when I'm sitting on toilet (sorry if i'm so graphic), i get some tissue and gently press the area around the rectal opening. It helps get some of that stuff out and gives me some relief.
