My stoma output has always been pretty high and I had 2 consecutive hospital visits weeks after my surgery as a result of this and dehydration etc. I have been managing it ok since but since last week my output has been reaching 1.5litres + , is usually very liquidy and often contains a lot of undigested food. I'm a bit worried about the effects of this. I was taking a high dose of Loperamide but have been decreasing it since being in hospital, and have been down to a stable lower dose for a few weeks now, but all of a sudden my output is very high. I am eating well and having a lot of 'stodgy' food like I've been told. Any ideas or suggestions?!

I had a high output stoma (temporarily for 6 weeks) and had to be on IV fluids at home overnight to stay hydrated. Besides Loperamide, my surgeon recommended that I also take Metamucil (fiber) to try to thicken the output. Are you eating bulking foods, like potatoes, rice, bananas, peanut butter, oatmeal and bread? Is that what 'stodgy' means?

Wishing you all the best,

I am 3 weeks out of the hospital with an ileostomy and I've been putting out between 1300 and 1900 cc's of stool. I wondered what an high output means. Is it a bad thing since I nosh out on food hourly?

High sugar (or sugar like substance) may increase your output, as does caffeine (for me), greasy and/or spicy foods. If you don't mind the extra output and your are inputting (!), then, by all means, keep inputting :) I take 3 loperamide 3 x a day..... I like sugar, but no caffeine and really watch greasy foods, but like them too :)

Baby food bananas helped to thicken my output.
